JROTC Instructor
Reports to: Director II - JROTC
PCN: Mutiple

Grade 204
219 Days
Salary: $73,781 - $88,892 or Military Instructor Pay (MIP)


FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Purpose
Senior military service instructor to secondary level cadets, responsible for leading, managing, and implementing the overall high school JROTC program according to national, state, and District standards.  Leads other assigned instructors in promoting academic achievement, social, patriotic, character education, leadership, and physical growth.
Responsible for managing and implementing the military service's national education curriculum and program requirements; prepares plans, coordination, and supervision of all co-curricular service learning, special activities or events (military ball, drill meets, marksmanship matches, honor guards, orienteering, and other extracurricular activities).  Promotes school and community service events.  Supervises property management, fund-raising, and budget controls for the unit.  Administers the automated cadet record system and reporting for military and District information.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
 
  • Teaches, assesses, evaluates, and documents student progress and growth through formal and informal evaluation procedures; evaluates students' progress, and determines materials and strategies to provide for their needs.
  • Implements and coordinates the national curriculum, lesson plans, curriculum and extracurricular activities, and objectives with other content areas in order to provide for transfer of learning and knowledge.
  • Develops thematic units and other projects to provide for extended interaction and creativity; instructs 180 hours of military directed subject materials in classroom and laboratory environment.
  • Teaches and promotes Honors U.S. Military History Elective.
  • Establishes necessary supply, budget, and administrative accounts in coordination with Cadet Command regulations.
  • Supervises property management and budget controls for the unit.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Administers the automated cadet record system, and reporting for military and District information.
  • Submits required Cadet Command reports, as necessary, and in accordance with the required report timelines and procedures.
  • Administers, advises, and appraises extracurricular teams (drill, rifle, physical training, academic challenge, cyber patriot/robotics, orienteering, and marksmanship).
  • Determines and administers cadets who serve in key leadership positions (command and staff).
  • Administers, advises, coordinates, and supervises special activities or events such as the annual military ball, drill meets, and the Final Review awards ceremony.
  • Implements and maintains communication and coordination with the school faculty and staff to promote cadet involvement in school activities, cadet recruitment, and retention.
  • Coordinates, collaborates, and compiles data for data records in the automated cadet database.
  • Counsels, mentors, and tutors cadets as needed.
 
Safety
 
  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
 
Supervisory Responsibilities
 
  • Leads, coordinates, monitors, and directs the work of Instructors.
  • Supervises and evaluates JROTC Instructor(s) assigned to campus within the JROTC program.

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge and understanding of literacy instruction.
  • Knowledge of current height and weight standards as outlined in Cadet Command Regulation 145-2, dated February 2016.
  • Knowledge of military standards for maintaining personal fitness.
  • Knowledge of personal grooming standards as outlined in Army Regulation 670-1.
  • Skill in monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Skill in organizational development, communications, public and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in evaluating instructional programs and teaching effectiveness; program evaluation.
  • Ability to establish program goals and objectives that support the strategic plan, and develop and implement plans in all areas of the instructional program.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and creativity in making decisions.
  • Ability to occasionally experience up to 18 hours of sleep deprivation involving driving and supervision of students for outdoor adventure, service learning, and leadership and character development.
  • Ability to use software to access databases, do word processing, and do email.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and implement effective time management techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with students, parents, staff, community, and stakeholders in a multi-ethnic educational environment.

Travel Requirements
 
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
 
Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
 
  • Tools/Equipment Used:  Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; standard school instructional equipment; standard military instructional equipment related to drills, exercises, and armory.
  • Posture:  Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion:  Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; prolonged walking; driving.
  • Lifting:  Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
  • Exerting:  Frequently exerts 10-25 pounds of force to move objects; occasionally exerts 20 to 70 pounds of force.
  • Environment:  Works 60% in a controlled air-conditioned environment; works 40% outdoors (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); frequent exposure to noise; requires occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours; exposed to substandard housing/ barracks/ hygiene, and personal health and safety risk conditions.
  • Attendance:  Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position; requires occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Mental Demands:  Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions; occasionally requires up to 18 hours of sleep deprivation involving driving and supervision of students for outdoor adventure, service learning, and leadership and character development.
  • Military Standards: 
    • Leading and supervising parades requiring extensive marching and voice projection;
    • Maintaining personal fitness according to military standards; leading fitness training, walking, running, and jumping;
    • Occasional exposure to safety risks in outdoor adventure training including rappelling, heights over 34 feet, negotiating obstacles, and orienteering;
    • Occasionally requires up to 18 hours of sleep deprivation involving driving and supervision of students for outdoor adventure, service learning, and leadership and character development.
Minimum Required Qualifications
 
  • Education: 
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required;
    • Master's degree from an accredited college or university preferred;
    • Completed Senior Military Education for Grade.
  • Certification/License: 
    • Army Federal JROTC instructor certification;
    • Fully qualified with completion of secondary education teaching certification;
    • Clear and valid Texas Driver's License;
    • Insurable by the District's insurance carrier.
  • Experience: 
    • Retired Army Warrant/Commissioned Officer [Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW2), or Major (MAJ) O-4 up through Colonel (COL) O-6] with a minimum of 20 years military service;
    • Not retired from military service longer than 3 years, or active duty;
    • Troop level experience (company level, Battalion, Brigade);
    • Executive Staff experience.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Meet current height and weight standards as outlined in Cadet Command Regulation 145-2, dated February 2016;
    • Wear the Army uniform and meet personal grooming standards as outlined in Army Regulation 670-1;
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and automation technology skills.
 
INSURABILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DRIVERS
 
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
  • Driving and accident record:
Valid Texas Department of Public Safety Driver Record Check Type 3A-Certified list of all crashes and violations http://dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/driverrecords.htm
  • NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
    • moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
    • failure to provide proof of valid driver's license or proof of insurance;
    • equipment violations.
  • NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
  • NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
  • NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
  • NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver's license.
  • NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
  • NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
  • NO operating a vehicle without owner's permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
  • NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
  • NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
  • NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
 
  • Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD's Fleet Insurance Carrier.
