What are some common challenges Data Analysts face when working with large datasets, and how are they typically addressed?

Data Analysts often encounter challenges such as data quality issues, missing or inconsistent values, and slow processing times when handling large datasets. These challenges are typically addressed by implementing data cleaning routines, using advanced data management tools, and leveraging programming languages like Python or R for efficient data manipulation. Collaboration with database administrators and IT teams is also common to ensure data integrity and optimize data storage solutions. Staying updated with best practices in data wrangling and visualization helps Data Analysts deliver accurate and actionable insights.

Will AI replace a data analyst?

AI tools can automate routine data processing and basic analysis tasks, but data analysts are essential for interpreting complex data, making strategic decisions, and providing context. The role of a data analyst involves skills like critical thinking, domain knowledge, and communication that AI cannot fully replicate. Therefore, AI is more likely to augment rather than replace data analysts in the foreseeable future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a relevant degree such as in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Familiarity with data analysis tools like SQL, Excel, Python or R, and experience with visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help analysts interpret data insights and present findings clearly to stakeholders. These skills are crucial for transforming raw data into actionable business insights that drive informed decision-making.

How much does an entry level data analyst make?

Entry-level data analysts typically earn between $55,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on the industry and location. Starting salaries may be higher with relevant skills in SQL, Excel, and data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

Data analysts can sometimes earn around $3,000 per month with relevant skills in data visualization, Excel, and basic statistical tools, even without a formal degree. Entry-level roles or freelance work in data analysis, digital marketing, or customer support may also reach this income level, especially with experience and certifications. However, salaries vary based on location, industry, and skill level.

Job description

We're in this for the greater good at ParetoHealth. Our mission is collective greatness, nothing less will do. Our team is a single force united in the drive to transform employee health benefits.
The company was founded in 2011 to help small and medium-sized businesses fight the rising cost of employee health benefits. We blazed the trail with financing innovations that reduce the risks in self-insurance and deliver significant savings-and we continue to lead with a growing ecosystem of partners and world-class cost control solutions.
But success is measured by more than dollars alone and we measure ours by the good that comes from knowing that every client and all their employees can count on effective, affordable healthcare for years to come.
Please note that ParetoHealth does not provide employment visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship both now or in the future.
About The Team
At ParetoHealth, the Analytics team sits at the intersection of healthcare data, business strategy, and decision-making. We work with rich medical, pharmacy, stoploss, and business datasets to generate insights that directly influence product strategy, client outcomes, underwriting, and internal operations. The team partners closely with a varied set of stakeholders to move from questions to action, promoting data-driven decision making across the organization. We do this within a team culture of collaboration, shared responsibility, mutual respect, and growth.
Position Summary:
This role is designed for a senior, analytically sophisticated individual contributor who feels most at home in the space between data science and traditional BI analytics.
As a Lead Data Analyst, you will partner closely with Data Scientists and cross-functional stakeholders to tackle complex, ambiguous analytical problems. You will lead analyses end-to-end, framing questions, wrangling and validating data, designing sound analytical approaches, and translating results into clear, actionable insights.
This role is not focused on building predictive models or machine learning systems for production, and it does not include people management responsibilities. Success in this role comes from analytic rigor, business judgment, and the ability to turn complex data into decisions. You will report to the VP of Analytics.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead End-to-End Analyses
    • Partner with stakeholders to understand business priorities and translate them into analytical approaches
    • Design, test, and refine appropriate methodologies for complex analytical questions
    • Work directly with large, messy healthcare datasets, including medical and pharmacy claims
    • Build and maintain robust SQL queries and analytical datasets
  • Deliver Decision-Ready Insights
    • Develop clear visualizations and summaries that communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences
    • Translate complex analyses into actionable recommendations
    • Document methodologies, assumptions, and limitations to ensure transparency and repeatability
  • Collaborate Within the Team
    • Work closely with Data Scientists to support exploratory analyses, hypothesis generation, and interpretation of results
    • Partner with Analytics teammates to align definitions, methodologies, and data quality standards
    • Contribute through collaboration and shared problem-solving
  • Drive Business Impact
    • Proactively identify opportunities where analytics can improve business outcomes
    • Support teams across the organization, including underwriting, product, account management, and cost containment

What We're Looking For:
  • A problem-solver with a natural sense of curiosity, analytic rigor, and a deep interest in understanding complex healthcare data
  • A collaborator with proven ability to work cross-functionally across many different stakeholders to create and deliver insights
  • A strong communicator who effectively shares information at the appropriate level across a wide variety of audiences
  • A self-starter with a demonstrated track record of owning projects from idea to execution
  • A critical thinker with demonstrated ability to be creative, strategic, and to apply strong business judgement
  • A translator who can turn complex analysis into actionable insights and recommendations for the business

Core Qualifications:
  • 8-10+ years' experience in a healthcare-based analytics role, preferably in the health benefits space/insurance industry
  • Deep, hands-on experience working with administrative healthcare data (medical and pharmacy claims)
  • Strong mathematical and statistical foundation, including comfort with quantitative reasoning, distributions, rates, and variability as applied to real-world healthcare data
  • Expert-level SQL skills, including building, optimizing, and validating complex analytical queries
  • Advanced proficiency in data visualization tools such as Tableau
  • Extensive experience in data cleaning, validation, and exploratory analysis using large, complex datasets
  • Strong understanding of analytical methods, including descriptive statistics, cohort analysis, risk assessment, trend analysis, and causal thinking
  • Strong analytic judgment: knowing which method to use, why, and when
  • Master's degree in a quantitative/analytic field (or equivalent work experience)

Bonus Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of Python or R for analysis and data wrangling (advanced modeling not required)
  • Experience working with data from CRM systems, e.g., Salesforce
  • Familiarity with underwriting and actuarial risk assessments for healthcare insurance coverage
  • Familiarity with AWS Serverless Services and data tools, such as S3, Lambda, Glue, Sagemaker and EMR

Perks & Benefits:
  • Fully paid medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Flexible PTO
  • 401k company contribution
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Professional development allowance
  • Transportation allowance and daily parking reimbursement
  • Engaging hybrid work environment

We are guided by our values:
Fire in the belly
The drive to learn, to improve, and to deliver outstanding value every day.
See the field
The ability to see the big picture and prepare to meet tomorrow's needs.
Get it done right
The passion to produce at higher rates and to the highest standards.
For the greater good
A united community creating better health benefit solutions for all.
