A Day in the Life

The Senior Process Engineer is responsible for providing support for multiple product families related to safety, quality, service, product cost, process improvements, and customer feedback across chemical, extrusion, textile, and biomedical manufacturing processes. This role leads and participates in cross‑functional teams to achieve project goals, support continuous improvement initiatives, and drive manufacturing performance.

Based at Medtronic's North Haven, Connecticut campus, a major manufacturing and engineering site supporting Surgical Innovations products, the Senior Process Engineer serves as a technical expert for production equipment and manufacturing processes. The role also supports new products transitioning from R&D into manufacturing, helping ensure successful product launch, operational readiness, and long‑term manufacturing sustainability.

The Senior Process Engineer will:

  • Support the day‑to‑day manufacturing of absorbable and non‑absorbable sutures, including polymer development, crystallization, purification, extrusion, annealing, and textile manufacturing processes.
  • Lead cross‑functional teams and projects using project management tools to plan, track, and deliver technical, operational, and financial objectives.
  • Provide technical expertise for the specification, procurement, installation, qualification, validation, troubleshooting, and training of chemical, polymer extrusion, textile, and biomedical manufacturing processes and equipment.
  • Identify and lead opportunities to improve process and equipment capability, reliability, and manufacturing efficiency through data analysis, statistical methods, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support new product development, quality improvement, product integration, and capital equipment projects.
  • Execute engineering qualifications and process validations, including IQ/OQ/PQ activities, to support manufacturing, compliance, and operational objectives.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, Planning, Safety, and other cross‑functional teams to investigate production and field issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Manage engineering change notices, BOM creation and maintenance, ERP/SPAC system activities, and provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience
  • OR Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience
  • OR PhD with 0 years relevant experience
  • Experience applying statistical methods and science‑based decision making to design experiments and implement process improvements.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and priorities in a manufacturing, engineering, or product development environment.
  • Experience working on cross‑functional teams to deliver technical projects and business objectives.
  • Experience using Minitab for data analysis and problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the medical device industry.
  • Experience with Design for Reliability (DFR), Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), and/or Lean Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Experience supporting absorbable polymer products or technologies.
  • Experience with polymer development and manufacturing, fiber extrusion, textile manufacturing, and/or material characterization.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical, Mechanical, Bio‑Medical Engineering, or related.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
