Job description

Senior Data Analyst

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time experience in data analytics, reporting, data management, database applications and/or related experience. Proficiency with SQL. Experience with data visualization and analysis software (Tableau, Power BI). Proficiency in Python.

Preferred Qualifications:

An additional year (1 ) of full-time experience in data analytics, reporting, data management, database applications and/or related experience. Experience working in a university, nonprofit and/or hospital setting. Experience working with fundraising systems such as Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce Ascend or similar CRM platforms. Experience with Monday.com.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Senior Data Analyst will support the Stony Brook University Office of Advancement and the Stony Brook Foundation by transforming data into meaningful insights that inform fundraising and engagement strategies. The Senior Data Analyst will be responsible for reporting, analysis, and data quality initiatives, applying deeper technical expertise and analytical judgment to ensure accuracy and efficiency across Advancement systems. The Senior Data Analyst will collaborate closely with colleagues across departments to strengthen data-driven decision-making and support Advancement and institutional goals.

  • Data Analysis & Reporting:

  • Design, build and maintain reports, dashboards, and visualizations using Tableau, SQL, and Excel.

  • Conduct complex, in-depth analyses to identify patterns, measure campaign effectiveness, and support decision-making across Advancement.

  • Translate complex data into clear insights that can be easily understood by leadership and staff.

  • Systems & Process Improvement:

  • Design and automate workflows and streamline reporting processes to increase efficiency.

  • Test, debug, and enhance reporting tools to ensure accuracy and user-friendliness.

  • Evaluate, recommend new tools and technologies that support Advancement's data capabilities.

  • Develop and maintain quality assurance procedures for reporting tools to ensure accuracy, scalability, and user-friendliness; support testing and continuous improvement cycles.

  • Apply and maintain data security controls, including role-based or row-level access, to protect sensitive Advancement data in accordance with established security protocols.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration & Project Management:

  • Partner with Advancement teams to understand data needs, provide guidance on data interpretation, and ensure reporting aligns with division goals.

  • Provide guidance to colleagues on data interpretation and usage to strengthen data-driven decision-making.

  • Coordinate various cross-departmental projects, ensuring data insights are aligned with Advancement’s strategic priorities.

  • Present findings and recommendations to leadership, translating data into compelling narratives that support strategic planning.

  • Data Quality & Management:

  • Maintain and apply data integrity standards within various Stony Brook Foundation and Advancement systems.

  • Lead regular data cleansing routines, troubleshoot discrepancies, and implement solutions for long-term accuracy.

  • Develop and maintain standards, processes, and validation procedures to ensure consistency and reliability across datasets.

  • Develop and maintain clear documentation of processes, procedures, protocols, and related guidelines.

  • Growth/Development:

  • Stay current with evolving data analytics tools, best practices, and industry trends. Share knowledge with colleagues to foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement.

  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
