What is a data analyst at GitHub?

Data Analysts on GitHub are professionals or contributors who use the platform to share, collaborate, and manage data analysis projects. They leverage GitHub to store datasets, share scripts and code (often in languages like Python or R), and document their analyses using tools like Jupyter Notebooks or Markdown. GitHub enables Data Analysts to version-control their work, collaborate with others through pull requests and issues, and showcase their portfolios to potential employers or collaborators.

How does a data analyst at GitHub typically collaborate with engineering and product teams?

At GitHub, Data Analysts frequently work alongside engineering and product teams to translate business questions into actionable data insights. They participate in cross-functional meetings, help define key metrics, and build dashboards or reports tailored to the needs of different stakeholders. Effective collaboration requires strong communication skills, as analysts must explain complex data findings to both technical and non-technical colleagues. This collaborative environment fosters continual learning and often provides opportunities to contribute to strategic decisions that impact the direction of products and features.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data analyst at GitHub, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst on GitHub, you need strong analytical skills, experience in statistics, and proficiency in data manipulation using languages like Python or SQL, often backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), Git version control, and GitHub workflows is essential, and certifications in data analysis or related fields are advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating on open-source projects and sharing insights. These competencies enable accurate data-driven decision-making, efficient project collaboration, and impactful contributions to the GitHub community.

Job description

Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Focus on the Family has nearly 700 employees who work to achieve the mission of enriching the lives of families, engaging the culture, advocating for life and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The work is meaningful, the culture is rewarding, and the purpose is eternal.
The Sr. Data Engineer, Data Products position exists to design, build, and optimize certified data products on the ministry's enterprise data platform. This position develops and tests governed, reusable data sets, semantic models, and pipelines that support ministry reporting, advanced analytics, and AI-enabled consumption, partnering with ministry departments so that key performance indicators are accurate, trusted, and consistently defined across the organization.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Development:
  • Designs and builds Snowflake-centric solutions - including optimized views, data models, and stored procedures - that support business intelligence, analytics, business operations, and data quality.

  • Builds and certifies semantic views defining ministry metrics, dimensions, and relationships, structured to serve both traditional BI consumption and AI-driven natural language querying (e.g., Snowflake Cortex Analyst), so that measures are represented consistently for human and machine consumers.

  • Builds durable, optimized ETL/ELT pipelines for data ingress and egress using SQL and Python (including Snowpark and Python stored procedures), in collaboration with the Data Warehouse Manager.

  • Develops and maintains scheduled automation (Snowflake Tasks, Streams, or equivalent orchestration tooling) to support reliable, hands-off data processing.

  • Manages database code changes through version control and a defined deployment process, testing and validating pipelines and data objects prior to promotion to production.

Data Products & Governance:
  • Owns assigned certified data products end to end - definition, documentation, quality tests, versioning, and deprecation - so ministry departments can consume them with confidence and without rework.

  • Serves as the data product representative for multiple (5-10) ministry departments, translating recurring business questions into certified, reusable data sets rather than one-off reports.

  • Monitors and optimizes Snowflake performance, storage utilization, and query execution.

  • Advises on, supports, and implements governance standards for least privilege, security, and privacy, including role-based access control, row-level security, and data masking.

  • Evaluates and implements Snowflake AI capabilities (e.g., Cortex functions for document processing, classification, or forecasting) where they provide clear business value, in collaboration with data governance stakeholders.

  • Adheres to organizational data privacy and security policies when using AI tools of any kind, ensuring no sensitive or regulated data is submitted to external or unapproved AI services.

Collaboration & Documentation:
  • Partners with business stakeholders, engineers, and analysts to gather requirements, confirm data product definitions, and ensure alignment with ministry reporting needs.

  • Supports data migration and modernization efforts, including migration from on-premises legacy platforms (e.g., SQL Server, SSRS) to the enterprise data platform.

  • Identifies data processing and data quality issues in collaboration with the Data Quality Analyst.

  • Develops technical documentation and apply metadata tagging to convey lineage, ownership, and approved usage.

  • Uses AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Snowflake Copilot) to improve development speed and code quality, while retaining full responsibility for validating, testing, and securing all AI-assisted output before deployment.

Other Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Managerial Breadth/Scope of Job:
  • None

  • Office environment
  • Must be able to work at a computer workstation for multiple hours with infrequent interruption
