What is a cybersecurity project manager?

A Cybersecurity Project Manager is a professional responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing cybersecurity projects within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams to ensure security initiatives are completed on time, within budget, and meet the organization's security requirements. Their duties often include risk management, resource allocation, scheduling, and communication with stakeholders. Cybersecurity Project Managers play a crucial role in protecting a company's data, networks, and systems from cyber threats by ensuring security projects are delivered effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cybersecurity project manager?

To excel as a Cybersecurity Project Manager, you need a solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, project management methodologies, and a relevant bachelor's degree, often complemented by certifications like PMP or CISSP. Familiarity with project management tools (such as JIRA or MS Project), risk assessment platforms, and security frameworks (like NIST or ISO 27001) is typically required. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These competencies ensure projects are delivered securely, on time, and within scope, protecting organizational assets from cyber threats.

What are some typical challenges a cybersecurity project manager faces when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Cybersecurity Project Managers often work with diverse teams, including IT, compliance, and business stakeholders. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication between technical and non-technical members, as misunderstandings can delay project timelines. Balancing security requirements with business objectives, managing shifting priorities, and addressing resource constraints are also frequent hurdles. Developing strong collaboration skills and maintaining a proactive approach to risk management are key to overcoming these challenges and successfully delivering cybersecurity projects.

Job description

Job Title: Cyber SecurityProject Manager
Job Location: Deerfield Beach, FL (Hybrid - 3 Days a week onsite)
Duration: Multi - Year Contract
Overview
Our client is standing a new in-house security program built to address the rapidly evolving threat landscape created by AI. As AI accelerates both the volume and sophistication of attacks, the organization is investing in a dedicated program to harden its endpoint, application, and vulnerability management posture.
The program spans multiple concurrent technical work streams. Two Project Managers are being added to drive execution across all of them, partnering closely with the engineering leads who own each stream.
This is a hands-on, technically grounded PM role. You will not be managing a generic IT portfolio - you will be embedded in cybersecurity work and expected to speak the language of the engineers you support.
Key Responsibilities
  • Drive end-to-enddelivery across multiple parallel cybersecurity work streams, owningschedule, scope, dependencies, and risk for each
  • Partner daily with technicalwork stream leads to translate engineering activity into clear plans, milestones, and executive-ready status
  • Manage projects using awaterfall delivery methodology - build and maintain detailed projectplans, phase gates, and milestone tracking
  • Coordinate deliveryacross security domains including application packaging, endpoint policyand permission management (governing what applications users can install),patch management, and vulnerability remediation
  • Identify cross-streamdependencies and resource conflicts early, and escalate with a recommendedpath forward
  • Maintain projectdocumentation, issue and risk logs, and status reporting for programleadership
  • Track work in AzureDevOps (ADO) and keep the board current as a system of record
  • Facilitate workingsessions, stakeholder reviews, and phase-gate checkpoints across technicaland business stakeholders

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of projectmanagement experience, with a substantial portion supporting cybersecurityor infrastructure programs
  • Demonstrated technicalfluency in security operations - able to hold a credible conversationabout patch cycles, CVEs and vulnerability severity, application packagingand deployment, and endpoint policy enforcement
  • Proven track recordmanaging multiple concurrent work streams and technical stakeholderssimultaneously
  • Strong written andverbal communication skills, including status reporting to seniorstakeholders
  • Working familiarity withAzure DevOps or a comparable work-tracking tool
  • Able to work onsitethree days per week; must be local to [City, State]

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experiencedelivering with a waterfall methodology (detailed project plans, definedphases, milestone and gate management)
  • Prior experiencesupporting a security program stood up from scratch, or a similar 0-to-1program environment
  • Exposure to AI-driventhreat vectors and how they change traditional security response
  • Background in endpointmanagement, SCCM/Intune, or enterprise software deployment
  • Experience in a regulatedor enterprise-scale environment

Notes
  • PMP certification is notrequired. Practical delivery experience in a technical security environment isweighted more heavily than certification.
  • Agile/Scrum experienceis not required. This program runs on a waterfall model; candidates whose entire backgroundis Agile-only should be screened carefully for fit.
