What is a cybersecurity overlay?

A Cybersecurity Overlay is a tailored set of cybersecurity controls or requirements that are added to a system or network on top of existing security frameworks. These overlays address specific risks, compliance needs, or operational environments that aren't fully covered by general security standards. They help organizations ensure that their cybersecurity measures are appropriately aligned with unique threats or regulatory requirements. For example, overlays are commonly used in government and defense sectors to meet specific mission or data protection needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cybersecurity overlay, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cybersecurity Overlay, you need a deep understanding of cybersecurity principles, risk management, and enterprise IT environments, often backed by a relevant degree or certifications like CISSP or CISM. Familiarity with security solutions such as firewalls, SIEM tools, and endpoint protection platforms is essential. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills help bridge the gap between technical teams and clients or stakeholders. These skills are crucial for effectively identifying risks, recommending solutions, and ensuring robust cybersecurity strategies within organizations.

How does a cybersecurity overlay role typically collaborate with sales and technical teams to support client needs?

A Cybersecurity Overlay professional works closely with both sales and technical teams to ensure that cybersecurity solutions align with client requirements. They often join client meetings to provide subject matter expertise, help design tailored security offerings, and address any technical concerns. This collaboration involves translating complex security concepts for sales staff and customers, as well as working with engineers to ensure proposed solutions are feasible and robust. Success in this role requires strong communication skills and the ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
