What does a Cybersecurity Data Engineer do?

A Cybersecurity Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining systems that collect, process, and analyze security-related data. Their main goal is to help organizations detect and respond to cyber threats by ensuring that data pipelines and storage solutions are secure and efficient. They often work with large datasets, security tools, and machine learning algorithms to identify vulnerabilities and unusual activity. Additionally, they collaborate with other IT and security professionals to implement best practices and enhance overall cybersecurity posture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cybersecurity Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cybersecurity Data Engineer, you need strong skills in data engineering, cybersecurity best practices, and programming languages such as Python or SQL, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with security information and event management (SIEM) systems, big data tools like Hadoop or Spark, and certifications such as CISSP or CEH are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills are crucial for designing secure data pipelines, detecting threats, and ensuring organizational data integrity.

While both roles require cybersecurity certifications and work within security-focused environments, Cybersecurity Data Engineers primarily develop and manage data infrastructure for security analytics, whereas Cybersecurity Analysts focus on monitoring, threat detection, and incident response. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right skills to their security teams.

How does a Cybersecurity Data Engineer typically collaborate with security analysts and IT teams?

Cybersecurity Data Engineers work closely with security analysts and IT teams to design, implement, and maintain data pipelines that support threat detection and incident response. They collaborate by integrating various data sources, ensuring data quality, and providing timely access to relevant information for analysis. Frequent communication and regular meetings are common to align on project requirements, prioritize tasks, and troubleshoot issues together. This collaborative approach ensures that security teams have the accurate, actionable data they need to protect organizational assets effectively.

Job description

Job Title: Junior Cybersecurity Data Engineer (Zero Trust & Asset Intelligence)
Role Overview
We are seeking an inquisitive and detail-oriented Junior Cybersecurity Data Engineer to join our global Cyber Asset and Security Posture Management team. In this role, you will play a critical part in building the foundation of our Zero Trust strategy by ensuring we have complete, real-time visibility into our global technology estate.
You will act as the technical engine for our asset intelligence platform, building and maintaining complex data integrations, correlating exposure metrics, and transforming raw infrastructure data into actionable security insights. This position is ideal for a data-driven professional who is passionate about cybersecurity and wants to work at the intersection of data engineering, infrastructure visibility, and compliance automation.
Key Responsibilities
Data Engineering & Platform Integration
โ€ข Integration Management: Onboard, configure, and maintain robust data integrations between our security platforms, IT management systems, and cloud environments.
โ€ข Data Pipelines: Build and manage data flows that ingest, normalize, and correlate asset data from disparate enterprise sources to provide a unified "Source of Truth."
โ€ข Platform Support: Act as a technical administrator for our core asset intelligence and security posture management tools, ensuring system availability and data integrity.
Analytics, Reporting & Security Posture
โ€ข Intelligence Reporting: Utilize SQL and Power BI to analyze large datasets, building high-impact dashboards that visualize asset coverage, vulnerability exposure, and security compliance metrics.
โ€ข Data Quality Governance: Proactively identify and resolve data gaps, performing ongoing audits to ensure our security tools accurately reflect the current state of the global environment.
โ€ข Use-Case Enablement: Collaborate with Security, Audit, and Compliance teams to map raw technical data to specific business-critical security use cases.
Collaboration & Operational Excellence
โ€ข Cross-Tool Orchestration: Work with infrastructure and security teams to synchronize data across the security tech stack, ensuring that asset intelligence drives automated security workflows.
โ€ข Stakeholder Support: Translate security requirements into technical data solutions, providing actionable reporting to leadership and operational teams.
โ€ข Continuous Improvement: Participate in change management, platform upgrades, and vendor-managed service reviews to optimize the efficiency of our security posture management systems.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
โ€ข Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
โ€ข Experience Baseline: 1 to 3 years of experience in data engineering, data analysis, or IT security operations.
โ€ข Technical Mastery:
oStrong proficiency in SQL for complex data manipulation and transformation.
oHands-on experience building visualizations and reports in Power BI (or equivalent BI tools).
oFamiliarity with APIs and integration frameworks used to connect enterprise systems.
โ€ข Analytical Mindset: Demonstrated ability to take noisy, unstructured infrastructure data and turn it into clean, meaningful metrics.
Preferred Attributes
โ€ข Basic understanding of Zero Trust architecture, network security, or IT asset management principles.
โ€ข Experience working in an enterprise-scale, global environment with diverse, multi-platform infrastructure.
โ€ข High degree of curiosity and the ability to proactively troubleshoot "broken" data flows without needing constant guidance.
