The City of Torrance is seeking dedicated Police Services Officers to join the Torrance Police Department. The Torrance Police Department is currently accepting applications from all qualified candidates to support both current and future staffing needs. For this recruitment, there is an increased need to fill assignments that involve the supervision of female inmates.

The Position The Police Services Officer is a non-sworn public safety position that provides essential operational and administrative support to the Police Department. Incumbents perform a wide range of duties including prisoner booking and care, property and evidence management, parking enforcement, court liaison services, subpoena processing, community outreach, vehicle fleet coordination, and public assistance. The position serves as a key point of contact for the public by receiving complaints, answering inquiries, preparing reports, and assisting crime victims and community members.

Police Services Officers work in a dynamic law enforcement environment where they must exercise sound judgment, maintain accurate records, ensure compliance with established procedures, and effectively interact with diverse populations. This role requires strong customer service, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to perform multiple responsibilities while supporting the safety, security, and operational effectiveness of the Police Department. Hours: Police Services Officers must be available to work four, 10-hour shifts per week on a rotating basis, including weekends and holidays. Shift hours are 6 a.m. to 4 p.m

(Day Shift), 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. (Midnight) (Swing Shift), and 10 p.m

to 8 a.m. (Graveyard Shift). Shift Differentials: In addition to base pay, Police Services Officers will receive 5% for swing shift and 7.5% for graveyard shift

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and skills required is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate. No specific experience is required; experience working with the public is desirable.

Successful completion of a Standards and Training for Corrections certified Adult Corrections Officer Core Course must be completed within the first year of employment as a condition of continued employment. License and/or Certificates: A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Class C) of the appropriate class or grade. Successful candidates will possess the following: Excellent customer service and public relations skills Strong verbal and written communication abilities Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations Sound judgment and decision-making skills High level of integrity, discretion, and confidentiality Strong organizational and record-keeping skills Ability to multitask and prioritize competing responsibilities Attention to detail and accuracy Adaptability and willingness to work in various assignments Ability to build positive working relationships with diverse individuals Commitment to public safety and community service Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team This position is ideal for individuals who are interested in supporting law enforcement operations, serving the community, and performing meaningful work that contributes to the safety and well-being of the public.

Only those candidates who best meet the City and Department's needs will be invited to participate in the examination process, which will consist of the following components: Written Test: Weighted 40% (Tentatively scheduled on July 14, 2026) Oral Interview: Weighted 60% (Tentatively scheduled on August 4, 2026) The tentative test date(s) will be based on a sufficient number of applications received by the first review date. Candidates must pass each component of the exam process, as well as a thorough background investigation to be considered for hire. The background investigation will include job and personal references, arrest records, credit history, use of controlled substances, medical evaluations, and a polygraph. Candidates must also complete a six (6) to nine (9) week jailer training course during the first year of employment while on probation.

The training is a combination of classroom and physical fitness program.
