Custom Project Manager information

What is a custom project manager?

Custom Project Managers are professionals who oversee and coordinate specialized projects tailored to a client's specific requirements. They manage the planning, execution, and completion of projects that do not follow a standard template, ensuring that client needs are met within budget and timeline constraints. These managers facilitate communication between clients, designers, engineers, and vendors to deliver customized solutions. Their responsibilities include resource allocation, risk management, and quality assurance throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custom project manager?

To thrive as a Custom Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, industry-specific knowledge, and a relevant degree—often in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software like MS Project, Asana, or Trello, as well as certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2, is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help you coordinate teams and maintain client satisfaction. These skills ensure that custom projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the client’s specifications.

How does a custom project manager typically navigate changing client requirements during a project?

Custom Project Managers frequently encounter evolving client needs, which require strong adaptability and proactive communication. They usually manage these changes by implementing structured change management processes, maintaining transparent documentation, and holding regular check-ins with both clients and internal teams. This ensures everyone remains aligned and that project goals are adjusted as necessary, while still adhering to deadlines and budget constraints. Building trust and demonstrating flexibility are key to delivering successful custom projects in dynamic environments.

Johnston Millwork is a premium custom millwork company specializing in custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, doors, moldings, windows, and installation throughout the Bay Area. We're known for exceptional craftsmanship, outstanding customer service, and delivering projects the right way. As we continue to grow, we're looking for people who take ownership, solve problems, and care deeply about quality.
Position Summary

The Millwork Project Manager owns each project from the moment the contract is signed through final completion.
This is not an administrative role, and it is not a sales position. This is an ownership role responsible for planning, procurement, budgeting, scheduling, production coordination, installation coordination, and customer communication.
Your mission is simple:
Deliver every project on time, within budget, and with an exceptional customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage projects from contract through final completion.
  • Purchase materials and coordinate vendor deliveries.
  • Manage project budgets and protect profitability.
  • Coordinate with production to keep projects on schedule.
  • Schedule and oversee installations.
  • Review drawings and project specifications for accuracy.
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
  • Visit jobsites to verify conditions and resolve issues.
  • Communicate proactively with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Ensure every project is completed to Johnston Millwork's quality standards.
Qualifications

  • 3+ years of project management experience in millwork, cabinetry, finish carpentry, remodeling, or construction.
  • Ability to read architectural and shop drawings.
  • Strong organizational, budgeting, and communication skills.
  • Experience coordinating vendors, production, and field installation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to Bay Area jobsites.
Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who takes ownership.
You don't wait for problems—you anticipate them.
You don't point fingers—you solve problems.
You communicate clearly, follow through on commitments, and take pride in delivering exceptional work.
If you're looking for a job where you can make a real impact and help build one of the Bay Area's premier custom millwork companies, we'd love to meet you.
