What does a custom circuit design engineer do?

A Custom Circuit Design Engineer designs and develops specialized electronic circuits tailored to meet specific requirements for various applications, such as consumer electronics, medical devices, or telecommunications. They work with analog, digital, or mixed-signal circuits, creating schematics, running simulations, and collaborating with layout engineers to bring designs to life. These engineers ensure the circuit meets performance, reliability, and manufacturability standards while optimizing for power, size, and cost. They often use electronic design automation (EDA) tools and work closely with cross-functional teams throughout the product development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custom circuit design engineer?

To thrive as a Custom Circuit Design Engineer, you need strong expertise in analog and digital circuit design, a degree in electrical engineering or a related field, and a solid grasp of semiconductor fundamentals. Familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools like Cadence or Synopsys, as well as experience with simulation and PCB layout software, is typically required. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and effective teamwork set top candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing reliable, innovative circuits that meet complex performance and manufacturing requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by custom circuit design engineers when working on new projects?

Custom Circuit Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing the need for performance optimization with constraints like power consumption, cost, and space. They must ensure designs meet rigorous specifications while coordinating closely with layout engineers, verification teams, and sometimes customers to address issues as they arise. Additionally, adapting to rapidly evolving technology and tools, as well as troubleshooting unexpected design bugs during the prototyping and testing phases, are typical aspects of the role. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential to navigate these complexities successfully.

What is the difference between Custom Circuit Design Engineer vs PCB Design Engineer?

AspectCustom Circuit Design EngineerPCB Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related; certifications like IPC Designer CertificationBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or related; certifications like IPC Designer Certification
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, electronics companies, R&D departmentsElectronics manufacturing, design firms, R&D teams
Industry UsageDevelops custom electronic circuits, prototypes, embedded systemsDesigns printed circuit boards for various electronic products
Comparison FocusCreating complex, custom electronic circuits from scratchDesigning PCB layouts based on existing schematics

While both roles involve electronic design, a Custom Circuit Design Engineer focuses on developing unique, complex circuits, whereas a PCB Design Engineer specializes in laying out printed circuit boards based on circuit schematics. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and focus within the electronics development process.

Job description

Role Overview

As a Sr. Staff/Principal Custom Circuit Design Engineer at Velaura AI, you will lead the architecture, design, and optimization of high-performance, low-power standard cell libraries and custom digital circuits for next-generation AI and high-performance computing silicon. You will drive transistor-level innovation across advanced process
technologies, collaborating closely with layout, characterization, physical design, CAD, and product engineering teams to deliver world-class PPA, robustness, and manufacturability. This is a highly visible technical leadership role where you will influence library architecture, design methodologies, and next-generation circuit solutions while mentoring engineers and shaping the future of our silicon platform.

Responsibilities

Lead the architecture, design, and optimization of high-performance, low-power standard cells targeting advanced process technologies with a strong focus on Performance, Power, and Area (PPA).

Design and optimize transistor-level circuits including latches, flip-flops, multiplexers, AOI/OAI, XOR/XNOR, encoders, decoders, level shifters, arithmetic cells, and other complex sequential and combinational logic.

Architect and develop advanced arithmetic building blocks, including adders, multipliers, integer and floating-point MAC units, for high-performance compute applications.

Develop schematics using Cadence Virtuoso and perform post-layout validation through parasitic extraction using StarRC or Quantus.

Perform circuit verification across all PVT corners using HSPICE, PrimeSim XA, or Spectre, ensuring robust functionality, timing, and power performance.

Drive statistical verification using Monte Carlo methodologies and advanced variation analysis with Solido, Spectre FMC, or equivalent tools.

Own reliability sign-off activities, including electromigration (EM), IR-drop, self-heating, BTI/HCI aging analysis, while ensuring ESD and latch-up robustness.

Drive low-power circuit innovations through multi-Vt optimization, leakage reduction, power gating, retention strategies, isolation cells, and power-intent-aware design methodologies.

Collaborate closely with custom layout teams to optimize layouts for Layout Dependent Effects (LDE), manufacturability, coloring compliance, matching, and pin accessibility.

Partner with Characterization, Physical Design, STA, CAD, and Product Engineering teams to ensure successful library development, silicon readiness, and production-quality deliverables.

Drive design methodology improvements, automation initiatives, and technical best practices across the circuit design organization.

Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership in circuit design, methodology development, and advanced technology enablement.
