Job description

Smithers Cannabis Testing Services division is seeking applicants for a full-time Associate Microbiologist at our Wareham, MA location.

PLEASE NOTE:  If hired, you will initially work Monday through Friday during the training period, which is expected to last approximately two weeks. After completing training, your regular work schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday to provide microbiology support.

Position Summary

The Associate Microbiologist supports cannabis testing operations by performing essential laboratory tasks including sample intake, sample preparation, ancillary laboratory support activities. This role ensures the accurate and efficient processing of samples in compliance with applicable state regulations, company SOPs, and quality standards. The Associate Microbiologist works closely with analysts and other team members to maintain workflow efficiency, sample integrity, and a clean, safe laboratory environment. As time allows, the Associate Microbiologist will also be cross-trained to conduct sample preparation and extraction for subsequent chemical analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Duties

  • Receive and log incoming samples, verifying documentation and labeling accuracy.
  • Prepare samples for analysis following SOPs and safety protocols.
  • Conduct microbiological analysis of cannabis flower, concentrate and infused products.
  • Conduct routine data entry and basic calculations for non-complex analyses.
  • Maintain accurate chain-of-custody and sample tracking records.

Ancillary Laboratory Support

  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and other laboratory materials as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory inventory and restocking supplies.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory workspaces, glassware, and equipment.
  • Support analysts with non-technical tasks to facilitate laboratory workflow.
  • Crosstrain on analytical assays as laboratory demand dictates

Operational & Compliance Support

  • Follow all applicable state regulations and laboratory SOPs.
  • Maintain accurate records to meet regulatory and quality system requirements.
  • Adhere to safety procedures including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline preferred.
  • Experience in a laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Cannabis industry or regulated industry experience is a plus.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory practices and safety protocols.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and basic data entry.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and SOPs accurately.

Requirements

  • Must meet the minimum legal age requirement to work with cannabis in the state of operation.
  • Ability to pass a background check in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.

Working Conditions

  • Laboratory setting with exposure to solvents, chemicals, and cannabis-related odors.
  • Extended periods of standing, repetitive motions, and occasional lifting.
  • Full-time schedule; may require occasional evenings or weekends to meet workload demands.
