What is a custody assistant?

Custody Assistants are professionals who work in police stations or detention centers, providing support in the care and management of individuals in custody. Their duties include processing detainees, conducting welfare checks, assisting with searches, and maintaining accurate records. They play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of detainees while supporting police officers in maintaining a safe and secure environment. Custody Assistants also help facilitate communication between detainees and relevant authorities and may assist in providing basic needs such as meals and hygiene products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custody assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Custody Assistant, you need a solid understanding of detainee care, security procedures, and basic first aid, often supported by relevant training or qualifications. Familiarity with custody management systems, incident reporting software, and communication devices is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, resilience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure the safety, well-being, and legal compliance for detainees and staff in a challenging and dynamic environment.
