What is a custodial job?

Custodial jobs involve cleaning and maintaining buildings such as schools, offices, hospitals, and other facilities. Custodians are responsible for tasks like sweeping, mopping, dusting, emptying trash, and sometimes performing minor repairs. They play a key role in ensuring that environments are safe, sanitary, and pleasant for occupants. Custodial staff may also set up rooms for events or handle basic building security duties. The work can be physically demanding and often requires attention to detail and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custodial worker?

To thrive as a Custodial Worker, you need knowledge of cleaning procedures, safety protocols, and basic maintenance, typically acquired through on-the-job training or a high school diploma. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and sometimes OSHA safety certifications are often required. To overcome these, custodians typically rely on thorough training, clear communication with team members, and the use of schedules or checklists to prioritize tasks. Teamwork and regular check-ins with supervisors can also help address issues quickly and maintain a clean, safe environment for all facility users.
