What is custodial cleaning?

Custodial cleaning jobs involve maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of buildings such as schools, offices, hospitals, and other facilities. Custodians, also known as janitors or cleaners, are responsible for tasks like sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, emptying trash, and disinfecting surfaces. They may also handle minor repairs, restock supplies, and ensure that areas are safe and presentable for occupants. These roles are essential for promoting a healthy environment and preventing the spread of germs and illnesses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custodial cleaning professional?

To thrive as a Custodial Cleaning professional, you need a solid understanding of cleaning techniques, sanitation standards, and basic maintenance, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and safety protocols (such as OSHA regulations) is typically required. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and good time management are valued soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure a safe, hygienic environment and efficient operations in workplaces, schools, or public facilities.

Do custodial cleaning get paid more than janitors?

Custodial cleaning and janitorial positions are often considered similar roles, and pay rates typically depend on experience, location, and employer. Generally, there is no significant difference in pay between the two titles, though some employers may use different terminology or offer slight variations based on job responsibilities or certifications required.
