What Does a Curriculum Writer Do?

As a curriculum writer, your primary duties are to develop and help implement new academic instructional materials, lessons, and activities for teachers to use in their classrooms. In this career, you research educational trends and techniques to determine what are the best ways to instruct students; then you develop new curriculum that incorporates those methods. Your job duties may also include reviewing the current materials and help to improve or change the instruction to better meet guidelines set by the company, school district, or state educational board. Curriculum writers often work for public school districts, educational non-profits, and online educational start-ups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Curriculum Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Curriculum Writer, you need expertise in instructional design, subject matter knowledge, and a background in education—often supported by a degree in education or a related field. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), educational standards (like Common Core), and authoring tools such as Google Workspace or Adobe Creative Suite is typically required. Strong written communication, creativity, and attention to detail are vital soft skills for creating engaging and effective learning materials. These skills ensure that curriculum resources are pedagogically sound, aligned with standards, and accessible to diverse learners.

How does a Curriculum Writer typically collaborate with subject matter experts and teachers during the development process?

Curriculum Writers often work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) and teachers to ensure content accuracy and classroom relevance. This collaboration may involve conducting interviews, participating in workshops, and gathering feedback on drafts to refine instructional materials. Open communication and adaptability are key, as Curriculum Writers must integrate diverse perspectives while aligning with educational standards. These partnerships help create engaging and effective curricula that meet both educational goals and student needs.

What are curriculum writers?

Curriculum writers are education professionals who design, develop, and organize instructional materials and lesson plans for schools or educational programs. They work to align curricula with academic standards, ensuring that course content meets learning objectives and is appropriate for the target age group. Curriculum writers often collaborate with teachers, administrators, and subject matter experts to create effective and engaging educational resources. Their work helps guide classroom instruction and improve overall student learning outcomes.

At Lockheed Martin, we're revolutionizing the aerospace and defense sector through groundbreaking technology, advanced manufacturing processes, and a world-class team of professionals. Our mission-driven approach and unwavering dedication to excellence ensure that we continue to deliver superior products and solutions to our customers around the world.
THE WORK
The primary responsibility of the role is S1000D authoring and maintenance. The incumbent will develop, edit, and maintain data modules, data sets, and illustration references in accordance with S1000D (versions 3.0 through 4.1). Should have an familiarity with BREX rules and Customer Business decision templates.
A key element of the position is supplier data acceptance and integration. The author will review inbound supplier deliverables-such as data modules, illustrations, and video/audio media-to verify S1000D compliance, completeness, and alignment with the program's Contract Data Requirements List's (CDRL's). The role requires coordinating technical reviews with suppliers, issuing non-conformance notifications when needed, and tracking the resolution of those issues through the Supplier Management Portal. Validated supplier data will then be imported into the internal authoring environment (e.g., Arbortext, Contenta), with full audit-trail maintenance to support configuration control.
Technical writing and documentation support are also critical. The author will produce supporting narrative, procedural, and maintenance instructions that complement the S1000D modules, adhering to business decisions and all applicable customer specifications. When outsourcing authoring tasks, the incumbent will generate Statements of Work (SOW) that clearly define scope, deliverables, schedule, and quality metrics.
Project and schedule management duties include developing and maintaining delivery schedules for emerging projects, ensuring that authoring milestones are synchronized with overall system development timelines. The author will actively participate in Integrated Product Team (IPT) meetings, offering status updates, risk assessments, and technical clarifications to both internal teams and third-party suppliers.
In the realm of quality assurance and continuous improvement, the author will compile QCPC (Quality Clinic Process Chart) metrics for completed publications, conduct root-cause analyses on any defects, and produce corrective-action reports. Support for internal and external AS9100 audits is required, supplying the necessary documentation and evidence of compliance. The role also contributes to process-improvement initiatives designed to boost authoring efficiency, promote data reuse, and strengthen supplier collaboration.
Finally, stakeholder collaboration is a core part of the role. You'll work directly with program managers, contracts, finance, engineering, and external customers to clarify requirements, iron out data inconsistencies, and support cost-to-price analyses.
