Simon Wiesenthal Centerย (SWC) is a global Jewish human rights organization that confronts antisemitism and hate, defends the safety of Israel and Jews worldwide, and teaches the lessons of the Holocaust through awareness, advocacy, justice, education, and its Museums of Tolerance. With a constituency of over 400,000 member families since its founding in 1977, the SWC has an international footprint through itsย Museums of Tolerance,ย Moriah Films, and the Digital Terrorism + Hate Project.ย
Headquartered in Los Angeles, it maintains operations in New York, Chicago, Miami, Toronto, Paris, Berlin, Jerusalem, and Buenos Aires. It is an accredited Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) at the United Nations, UNESCO, the Organization of American States, the Latin American Parliament, and the Council of Europe and maintains relationships with the highest levels of governments throughout the world.ย

The Museum has served as the Centerโs flagship educational arm, challenging visitors to confront bigotry and racism, and to understand the Holocaust in both historical and contemporary contexts. In addition, the Center developed Moriah Media to produce theatrical documentaries to educate global audiences. Moriah has produced 17 documentaries to date, two of which have received the Academy Award for best feature documentary, The Long Way Home and Genocide.
Position Overview:ย
The Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT), an initiative of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, is launching a new mobile education program in Hawaii designed to bring anti-bias, media literacy, civic engagement, and human rights education to students and communities across the islands.ย
This work will be carried out in meaningful partnership with the communities of Hawaii and with deep respect for Hawaiian (Kanaka Maoli) history, culture, knowledge systems, and lived experience. MMOT recognizes that effective educational programming in Hawaii must be grounded in place-based learning and developed in conversation with local educators, cultural practitioners, and community partners.ย
To ensure that MMOT programming reflects the history, cultures, and lived experiences of Hawaii, the Museum of Tolerance seeks curriculum consultants, educators, historians, and cultural practitioners with deep knowledge of Hawaiian history, culture, and education to collaborate in the development of Hawaii-specific program content.ย
This consultant will work with the MMOT national education team to adapt and expand existing MMOT educational modules while developing new place-based content that centers Hawaii's unique cultural, historical, civic, and educational contexts.ย
The ideal consultant approaches this work with cultural humility and an understanding that Hawaii is home to many living cultures whose perspectives, traditions, and experiences continue to shape contemporary life across the islands.ย
This role is ideal for Hawaiian educators, historians, curriculum developers, and cultural practitioners who are passionate about education, storytelling, and strengthening civic dialogue across diverse communities.ย
Cultural Context:
The Mobile Museum of Tolerance recognizes the many ethnic groups that are well-established in Hawaii, as well as those that are recent arrivals as the stewards of these islands and is committed to honoring the cultural and historical context of Hawaii in all aspects of program development.ย
Curriculum development should reflect respect for Hawaiian knowledge systems, history, language, and cultural practices while ensuring that educational content is responsive to the diverse communities that call Hawaii home.ย
Consultant will help ensure that programming reflects local perspectives and avoids extractive or one-directional storytelling approaches, prioritizing authentic community partnership and culturally grounded educational practices.ย
Project Goals:
The Hawaii curriculum development project will:ย
- Integrate Hawaiian perspectives, language, and history into MMOT programmingย
- Develop place-based case studies and learning experiences rooted in Hawaiiย
- Connect local history to broader themes of identity, belonging, media literacy, and civic responsibilityย
- Ensure cultural accuracy and respectful representation of Hawaiian knowledge traditionsย
- Align educational materials with Hawaii Department of Education standards and classroom needsย
- Support educational experiences that are responsive to local communities and informed by Hawaii-based educational perspectivesย
- Incorporate culturally responsive and place-based learning approaches that reflect the unique historical and contemporary realities of Hawaiiย
The work will support student programs delivered through the Hawaii Mobile Museum of Tolerance, reaching schools and communities statewide.ย
Key Responsibilities:ย
Curriculum consultants will collaborate with the MMOT education team to:ย
- Advise on culturally grounded approaches to teaching about identity, bias, belonging, and community in Hawaiiย
- Develop Hawaii-centered curriculum modules, case studies, and storytelling elementsย
- Contribute historical and cultural expertise related to topics such as:ย
- Hawaiian history and sovereigntyย
- Immigration and multicultural identity in Hawaiiย
- Civic responsibility and community careย
- Contemporary media literacy and misinformationย
- Ensure appropriate use of Olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian language) and cultural concepts within program contentย
- Review and provide feedback on educational materials for cultural and historical accuracyย
- Participate in curriculum workshops and collaborative planning sessionsย
- Help identify local stories, primary sources, and community voices that can be integrated into programmingย
- Advise on culturally responsive educational practices and approaches that reflect the values, traditions, and lived experiences of Hawaii communitiesย
- Support the development of programming that is informed by reciprocal relationships with educators, cultural practitioners, and community partners across Hawaiiย
Qualifications:
MUST RESIDE IN HAWAII TO BE CONSIDERED
Ideal candidates will have:ย
- Experience teaching or developing curriculum related to Hawaiian history, culture, or educationย
- Familiarity with Hawaiian cultural perspectives and educational frameworksย
- Experience in K-12 education, higher education, museums, or community-based learning programsย
- Strong interest in topics including:ย
- Civic engagementย
- Identity and belongingย
- Media literacyย
- Dialogue frameworks and best practicesย
- Ability to collaborate with a national education team while ensuring local cultural authenticityย
Additionally, successful candidates will demonstrate:ย
- Cultural humility and a commitment to ongoing learningย
- Strong research skills
- An understanding of the unique cultural, historical, and social context of Hawaiiย
- Respect for Hawaiian knowledge systems, language, and lived experienceย
- A willingness to engage collaboratively with local educators, cultural practitioners, and community stakeholdersย
Preferred:ย
- Hawaiian cultural expertise or strong connections within Hawaiian educational communitiesย
- Experience working with the Hawaii Department of Educationย
- Familiarity with place-based or culturally responsive pedagogyย
- Knowledge of Indigenous education best practicesย
- Familiarity with concepts such as kuleana (responsibility), malama aina (stewardship of the land), and other culturally grounded frameworks relevant to education in Hawaiiย
Scope of Work:
This is a project-based consulting engagement expected to include:ย
- Curriculum developmentย ย
- Independent writing and content creationย
- Review and feedback on current MMOT educational modulesย
- Consultation on language and cultural representationย
Estimated project duration: 4โ6 monthsย
Compensation: Consultant rate commensurate with experience.
About the Mobile Museum of Tolerance:
The Mobile Museum of Tolerance is a traveling educational experience that brings immersive programs on antisemitism, civil rights, media literacy, and civic responsibility directly to schools and communities.ย
Through interactive technology, storytelling, and inquiry-based learning, MMOT programs help students explore questions of identity, bias, and democratic responsibility in the modern information environment.ย
The Hawaii mobile will expand this work through programming that reflects the unique cultural and historical landscape of Hawaii.ย
Commitment to Hawaii Communities:ย
The Mobile Museum of Tolerance is committed to work that will be done with deep awareness of and respect for the cultures of Native Hawaiians and the many ethnic groups that are well-established in Hawaiโi, as well as those that are recent arrivals. Programming will be developed in collaboration with local educators, cultural practitioners, and community partners to ensure relevance and respect for Hawaiiโs unique cultural and historical context. HMMOT believes that Hawaiโiโs multiethnic mix, in which no one race predominates, offers a unique and powerful platform for anti-hatred and anti-discrimination work.ย
We are committed to delivering educational programming that is developed in partnership with local communities.ย
We seek educators, consultants, and collaborators who understand that meaningful dialogue about tolerance, human rights, and civic engagement must be rooted in local context, and who approach this work in Hawaii with humility, respect, and partnership.ย
