Description
The Baltimore Sun is seeking a dynamic and creative Social Media Producer to contribute to our digital presence and drive the social media strategy. The Social Media Producer will curate timely content related to The Baltimore Sun stories, help execute on social media initiatives and elevate our digital storytelling across platforms. This role requires an energetic, independent and creative person with a passion for storytelling, expertise in social media platforms, and proficiency in industry-standard tools used for editing, capturing and designingcontent.
Essential Functions
  • Content Creation and Curation: Assist in the production of compelling, platform-specific content, including graphics, videos, and written posts, that reflect the quality and integrity of The Baltimore Sun's journalism.
  • User-Generated Content: Leverage both user-generated and public domain content to generate viral local videos and build a loyal audience base.
  • On-Camera Work: Shoot and edit on-camera content, featuring breaking news, feature and human-interest stories.
  • Trend Awareness: Stay current with social media trends, platform updates, and emerging technologies to keep The Baltimore Sun at the forefront of digital innovation.
  • Storytelling: Brainstorm, storyboard, produce original content pieces that can live on multiple social media channels.
  • Audience Engagement: Foster community interaction by responding to comments and monitoring conversations.
  • Urgency: Ensure that The Baltimore Sun is first to post accurate breaking news alerts across platforms. Use social media to guide breaking news coverage and seek out relevant visuals with proper permission.
  • Platform Management: Help manage and optimize The Baltimore Sun's presence across major social media platforms, including but not limited to X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Newsroom Training: Work with reporters to develop on-camera video skills and brainstorm story-specific social media ideas.
  • Brand Consistency: Ensure all social media content aligns with The Baltimore Sun's brand voice, editorial standards, and ethical guidelines.
  • Tool Utilization: Leverage social media management tools, such as Sprout Social, Echobox and Dispatch to schedule posts, monitor engagement, and streamline workflows.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with editorial, marketing, and multimedia teams to integrate social media strategies with broader organizational objectives.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • Experience: 1-2 years' experience in social media production, preferably in a news or media organization
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency with Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, etc.) for creating and editing high-quality visual content.
  • Knowledge of social media management tools, including Sprout Social or Echobox, for scheduling, analytics, and audience engagement.
  • Proficiency in shooting and editing video footage with tight deadlines
  • On Camera: Experience in front of the camera is a definite plus.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, adapting quickly to evolving news cycles and platform algorithms.
  • Knowledge of Journalism: Understanding of journalistic ethics and the ability to balance editorial integrity with audience engagement.
  • Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the Baltimore community and its unique cultural and news landscape is a plus.
  • Weekend availability: This position requires work on nights and weekends.

Salary Range: $40,000 - $52,000
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors, including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
