The Special Security Operations IT & Cyber Group (SSO-3) is seeking a skilled and motivated Linux systems engineer to join our Linux Services Team. This team designs, deploys, and maintains advanced Linux environments across multiple TS/SCI networks, supporting secure and mission-critical computing for national security programs.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with the cybersecurity team to ensure compliance with all technical requirements. You will perform advanced systems administration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 servers and workstations, configuring, deploying, and maintaining compliant enterprise Linux systems. Providing mentoring and technical guidance to less experienced staff is also a key part of this position, as is offering operational support to customers using standard procedures.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, automation tools, and version control systems and will play a key role in developing scalable, secure solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security missions.
As a member of the Linux Services Team, your responsibilities will include:
- Support system patching and lifecycle management through Red Hat Satellite and local repositories
- Develop and maintain automation workflows using Ansible Automation Platform and GitLab
- Develop, document, and maintain baseline configurations and standard operating procedures
- Deploy and manage GPU-enabled systems (e.g., NVIDIA DGX, HGX, CUDA, containerized AI workloads) to support AI and data-intensive environments
- Support enterprise storage systems (NFS, NAS, NetApp) to ensure data availability and integrity
- Participate in requirements gathering, capacity planning, and infrastructure modernization efforts
- Work independently and in teams on diverse, challenging IT-related projects
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Strong understanding of system security, access control, compliance frameworks, and risk management
- Extensive hands-on experience administering RHEL or similar Linux systems in enterprise environments
- Strong expertise with automation and configuration management tools (Ansible, Bash)
- Experience with GitLab or similar version control and CI/CD platforms
- Experience with Red Hat Satellite, configuration management, and patch automation
- Working knowledge of government hybrid cloud platforms such as OpenShift, AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, or DoD-accredited cloud environments
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Strong collaborative team and customer service mindset
Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a technical field and a minimum of 5 years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level post graduate work may be expected.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience building systems to comply with NIST 800-53, CIS, DoD STIG standards
- Experience with GPU-based computing environments, including NVIDIA DGX and HGX systems, CUDA, and familiarity with containerized and orchestration technologies such as Podman and Kubernetes
- Experience managing Linux systems integrated with Microsoft Active Directory, including authentication
- Experience troubleshooting Linux network connectivity and performance issues
- Experience managing enterprise storage systems (NFS, NAS, SAN, NetApp, or equivalent)
- Active DOE Q or DoD TS/SCI clearance
