What is a certified surgical technologist?

A certified surgical technologist, or CST, is a medical professional who assists in preparing the operating room for surgery, and assisting the surgeon before and during surgery. Their duties and responsibilities include preparing the OR, which includes arranging all equipment and making sure all the surgical tools are sterile. They also help the surgeon and nurses scrub before surgery. In addition to their duties in the surgical bay, they prepare patients for surgery by washing incision sites. During surgery, the CST keeps careful count of supplies such as sponges, passes equipment to the nurses and surgeons, and provides manual assistance like holding tools or organs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a certified surgical technologist?

To thrive as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), you need a solid understanding of surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and human anatomy, typically supported by completion of an accredited surgical technology program and CST certification. Familiarity with surgical instruments, sterilization equipment, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for supporting surgical teams, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining efficient operating room workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by certified surgical technologists in the operating room, and how can they prepare for them?

CSTs often face challenges such as managing high-pressure situations, adapting quickly to changes during surgery, and maintaining strict adherence to sterile techniques. They may also need to anticipate the needs of surgeons and handle a variety of surgical instruments efficiently. To prepare, CSTs should stay current with surgical procedures, participate in ongoing training, and develop strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with surgical teams. Building resilience and attention to detail can help CSTs navigate these challenges successfully.

What can you do with a certified surgical technologist certification?

A certified surgical technologist (CST) can assist in surgical procedures by preparing operating rooms, sterilizing equipment, and passing instruments to surgeons. The certification demonstrates competence in aseptic techniques and surgical procedures, enabling employment in hospitals, surgical centers, and clinics. CSTs often work closely with surgical teams and may specialize in areas like sterile processing or surgical assisting.
