What is a Cryptography Internships job?

A Cryptography Internship is a temporary position where students or early-career professionals gain hands-on experience in cryptographic techniques, security protocols, and encryption algorithms. Interns typically work under the guidance of experts in cybersecurity, contributing to research, implementation, and testing of cryptographic solutions. They may assist in securing communications, analyzing vulnerabilities, or developing encryption-based applications. These internships are valuable for gaining practical knowledge and networking within the cybersecurity industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Cryptography Internships position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Cryptography Internship, you should have a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and an understanding of cryptographic algorithms, ideally supported by relevant coursework or academic projects. Experience with programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java, and familiarity with cryptographic libraries and tools are highly valued. Attention to detail, curiosity, and effective communication skills are important soft skills in this field. These competencies enable interns to contribute to secure system development, solve complex problems, and collaborate effectively within team environments.

What types of projects or tasks do cryptography interns typically work on?

Cryptography interns often assist with tasks such as analyzing and implementing cryptographic protocols, developing secure communication systems, or performing vulnerability assessments on existing cryptographic implementations. They may support senior engineers in researching new cryptographic methods, automating cryptographic processes, or documenting technical findings. Interns usually work closely with software development, security, and research teams, providing valuable input and learning from experienced professionals. This hands-on involvement gives interns real-world experience and insights into the security field, preparing them for advanced roles after graduation.

Job description

We're looking for a Security Engineer to join the team that secures the foundational compute and networking systems powering AWS - the systems behind EC2, Nitro, EBS, VPC, and more.
You'll work directly with service teams across some of the most critical systems in cloud computing to find and fix security risks before they become problems. You will design security controls and provide architectural guidance for systems that operate at massive scale and underpin everything from generative AI workloads to the core cloud platform millions of customers depend on. You'll also work closely with fast-paced engineering teams to pioneer new ways of securing AI-first and AI-native development, shaping how security keeps up as the industry transforms.
Key job responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain automated security guardrails and paved paths that enable secure-by-default practices
- Engage early with development teams at the ideation and design stage to embed security into applications from the start, providing guidance on secure architecture and coding practices
- Build automated, continuous security assessment capabilities that replace manual security reviews and scale across our business unit
- Contribute code for security fixes and paved path solutions directly alongside developers, making the secure path the easy path
- Partner with developers to build scalable, self-service security tools that enable teams to identify and remediate security risks without bottlenecking on security teams
- Design and implement preventive and detective security controls that provide continuous assurance rather than point-in-time assessments
- Collaborate with security stakeholders to define and drive the long-term security strategy and participate in periodic on-call rotations to support security incidents
- Leverage AI tools and techniques to accelerate security assessments, automate threat detection, and drive innovation in how we secure systems at scale
