Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding cryptography-specific roles and remote optionsComparing general security roles with cryptography focus

Cryptography Engineer Remote specializes in encryption algorithms and secure communication, while Security Engineer Remote covers broader cybersecurity measures. Both roles often require similar certifications and work in tech or finance sectors, but their focus areas differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Cryptography Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Cryptography Engineers often encounter challenges related to secure collaboration and effective communication with distributed teams. Since the work frequently involves sensitive data and proprietary algorithms, ensuring secure development environments and adherence to strict security protocols is essential. Additionally, bridging time zone differences and maintaining alignment with cross-functional teams—such as software developers and security analysts—requires proactive communication and strong documentation skills. Leveraging encrypted communication channels, regular virtual meetings, and clear version control practices can help mitigate these challenges and foster a productive, secure remote work environment.

What does a Cryptography Engineer do when working remotely?

A Cryptography Engineer working remotely designs, implements, and maintains secure cryptographic systems to protect sensitive data and communications. They analyze security protocols, develop encryption algorithms, and ensure that software and hardware systems adhere to cryptographic best practices. Remote cryptography engineers often collaborate with teams online, review code for vulnerabilities, and stay updated on emerging security threats and cryptographic advancements. Their work is crucial for safeguarding information in industries like finance, technology, and government.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cryptography Engineer (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cryptography Engineer (Remote), you need a deep understanding of cryptographic algorithms, security protocols, and computer science fundamentals, often supported by a degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with cryptographic libraries, programming languages like C/C++ or Python, and security certifications such as CISSP or CEH is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating remotely and addressing complex security challenges. These skills ensure the design and implementation of robust security solutions that protect sensitive data in distributed environments.

Job Description: Senior Quantum Readiness & Cryptography EngineerLocation: Remote
Employment Type: Full-TimeAbout SERVISSSERVISS LLC is a HUBZone-certified cybersecurity and mission engineering firm delivering transformative cyber solutions for federal, defense, and intelligence customers. We partner with agencies to solve tomorrow’s toughest problems today — whether that’s advancing cyber-asset visibility, driving cryptographic modernization, or engineering readiness for the post-quantum era. SERVISS engineers operate at the intersection of strategy, risk management, and cutting-edge defensive technologies to secure complex mission systems against emerging threats. Position SummarySERVISS is seeking a Senior Quantum Readiness & Cryptography Engineer to lead the strategy, architecture, implementation, and operational readiness for quantum-resilient cryptographic systems and programs. This technical leader will collaborate with cross-functional teams, government stakeholders, and engineering partners to advance quantum transition initiatives, post-quantum cryptographic standards adoption, and cryptographic inventory automation across enterprise environments. Successful candidates will blend deep cybersecurity systems engineering experience with practical understanding of quantum-era readiness frameworks and cryptographic lifecycle management. The WorkThis is a hands-on engineering role. The selected candidate will:
  • Deploy, configure, and tune automated cryptographic discovery and inventory tooling across enterprise endpoints, servers, and network infrastructure
  • Design, schedule, and operate cryptographic discovery scans, including scope definition, credential and sensor configuration, and performance tuning to minimize operational impact
  • Configure and maintain visualization and analytics platforms to render cryptographic inventory data into dashboards, reports, and risk views for technical and executive audiences
  • Build and operate data pipelines and queries in Splunk (preferred) to ingest, normalize, and analyze cryptographic discovery output
  • Design and execute test plans for tooling deployment, scan accuracy, data fidelity, and platform integration, including documenting test cases, acceptance criteria, and results
  • Implement and operationalize a continuous monitoring capability for the Department's cryptographic inventory, including recurring scan cadence, change detection, alerting, and trend reporting
  • Develop migration roadmaps and engineering artifacts to move the enterprise toward quantum-safe algorithms and crypto-agile architectures
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead enterprise-wide quantum readiness programs and cryptographic modernization efforts
  • Define and execute engineering strategies for post-quantum cryptography (PQC) transition
  • Build and operationalize automated cryptographic discovery, inventory, and risk analysis capabilities
  • Evaluate tools and technologies for cryptographic inventory, quantum-safe algorithms, and crypto-agile architectures
  • Interface with stakeholders to translate mission needs into secure, scalable engineering designs
  • Develop system architecture, migration roadmaps, and engineering artifacts for PQC deployments
  • Integrate quantum readiness outputs into governance, risk, and compliance reporting and tooling
  • Mentor and coach mid-level engineers to grow capabilities in cryptographic engineering and quantum risk management
  • Support audit, compliance, and continuous monitoring efforts for cryptographic controls and lifecycle management
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of progressive cybersecurity systems engineering experience
  • Active CISSP in good standing and/or willingness to earn a CISSP within 90 days of hire
  • Hands-on experience running system scans and integrating data and reporting into a SIEM (e.g. Splunk, Elastic, etc.) and other big data platforms
  • Demonstrated experience configuring visualization and analytics platforms to present security or asset inventory data
  • Experience running, scheduling, and tuning enterprise security or cryptographic discovery scans
  • Demonstrated expertise in cryptographic engineering, algorithm transition planning, and large-scale security programs
  • Understanding of emerging quantum threats and "harvest now, decrypt later" risk models
  • Proficiency with post-quantum cryptography standards and migration paradigms
  • Strong background in PKI, key lifecycle management, and secure protocol engineering
  • Experience translating security requirements into systems architecture in federal/CIO environments
  • Familiarity with NIST, NSA, or equivalent standards driving quantum-resilient cryptography
  • Proven ability to develop engineering documentation, test plans, technical roadmaps, and operational playbooks
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience configuring, administering, or building content in Splunk
