What is a cryogenic?

A cryogenic job involves working with extremely low temperatures, typically below -150°C (-238°F), to study, store, or manipulate materials and systems. Professionals in this field may work with liquefied gases like nitrogen, helium, or oxygen for applications in medical, aerospace, and scientific industries. Their tasks can include designing cryogenic equipment, maintaining storage systems, and ensuring safety protocols to handle ultra-cold substances.

What are the typical daily responsibilities in a cryogenic job?

In a cryogenic position, your day-to-day tasks may include monitoring and maintaining cryogenic equipment, handling and transferring cryogenic fluids such as liquid nitrogen or helium, and conducting experiments or processes that require extremely low temperatures. You may also be responsible for ensuring compliance with safety procedures, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and keeping detailed operational records. Collaboration with engineers, researchers, or production teams is often a key part of the role. These responsibilities help ensure the safe and efficient operation of systems and support the organization’s scientific or industrial goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the cryogenic position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a cryogenic role, a solid background in physics, engineering, or chemistry—often with a bachelor's degree or higher—is essential, along with hands-on laboratory or technical experience. Familiarity with equipment such as cryogenic freezers, liquid nitrogen systems, and safety protocols, as well as certifications like HAZMAT or OSHA, are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help individuals excel in these precise and safety-critical environments. These competencies ensure optimal performance in managing extremely low-temperature systems, maintaining safety, and collaborating within scientific or industrial teams.

A cryogenic engineer's salary typically ranges from $70,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and industry. Senior engineers or those working in specialized fields may earn higher wages, and the role often requires knowledge of thermodynamics, cryogenic systems, and relevant certifications.
