Cryo Tech information

What is a Cryo Tech?

Cryo Techs, short for Cryogenic Technicians, are specialized professionals who work with cryogenic equipment and substances, which are materials kept at extremely low temperatures. They are responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing systems that use liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, or other cryogenic fluids. Cryo Techs play a crucial role in industries such as healthcare (for medical storage and treatments), scientific research, and manufacturing. Their work ensures the safe handling and storage of temperature-sensitive materials. They also monitor safety protocols and troubleshoot equipment issues related to cryogenics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cryo Tech?

To thrive as a Cryo Tech, you need a solid understanding of cryogenic processes, laboratory safety, and relevant scientific principles, often supported by a degree in a science-related field or specialized technical training. Familiarity with cryogenic equipment, temperature monitoring systems, and safety certifications such as OSHA or HazMat are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help ensure safe and precise handling of materials and collaboration with other lab staff. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maintaining safety standards, ensuring equipment reliability, and supporting successful laboratory operations.

What are some common challenges Cryo Techs face when handling cryogenic materials, and how are these managed?

Cryo Techs often work with extremely low-temperature materials, which can pose risks such as frostbite, equipment failure, and accidental releases. Managing these challenges involves strict adherence to safety protocols, regular equipment maintenance, and use of specialized protective gear. Teamwork is essential, as Cryo Techs coordinate with lab personnel, engineers, and safety officers to ensure safe storage, transfer, and disposal of cryogenic substances. Ongoing training and clear communication are key to minimizing incidents and maintaining a safe work environment.

What is the difference between Cryo Tech vs Cryotherapy Technician?

AspectCryo TechCryotherapy Technician
CertificationsTypically requires specialized training in cryogenic proceduresOften requires certification in cryotherapy or related health and safety standards
Work EnvironmentWorks with industrial or medical cryogenic equipment, often in labs or medical settingsProvides localized or whole-body cryotherapy treatments in wellness clinics or spas
Industry UsageUsed in medical, industrial, and research applicationsPrimarily found in health, wellness, and sports recovery clinics

While both roles involve working with cryogenic technology, Cryo Techs typically handle industrial or medical cryogenic systems, whereas Cryotherapy Technicians focus on providing therapeutic treatments to clients. The certifications and work environments differ, but both require knowledge of safety protocols and specialized training.

Job description

We are looking for a Cryo Engineer to join our growing team at Bluefors in the United States. In this role, you will work hands-on with advanced cryogenic systems, supporting the assembly, testing, and commissioning of dilution refrigerator systems used in cutting-edge research and technology. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is technically driven, eager to learn, and interested in working in a high-tech, international environment at the forefront of innovation. Interested? Keep reading!

Your tasks will include performing system-level assembly and testing of cryogenic dilution refrigerators to ensure high-quality performance and reliability. You will support factory acceptance testing and participate in on-site installation and acceptance testing at customer locations. You will also deliver a wide range of expert services for Bluefors systems, ensuring customer satisfaction and system functionality. In addition, you will document system performance and processes in accordance with company standards and contribute to maintaining high-quality outcomes across all work. You may also support additional tasks as needed to meet team and organizational goals.

We are looking for a candidate with a Master’s degree or higher in applied or technical physics. You should have strong technical aptitude and be comfortable working hands-on with complex systems in a laboratory or production environment. Basic IT skills and proficiency with standard office programs are required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong teamwork and customer service skills, along with a positive, hands-on attitude and commitment to high-quality work. You should be able to work both independently and systematically, while effectively communicating in English, both written and spoken.

We also appreciate candidates with knowledge of safe cryogenic engineering practices and experience in experimental or low-temperature physics. A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required for visiting customer sites. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in an international, collaborative environment will help you stand out. Candidates who demonstrate curiosity, adaptability, and a passion for continuous learning—while aligning with our values of quality, teamwork, and innovation—will thrive in this role.

We offer you an interesting, challenging, and responsible position, along with the support of a highly skilled and growing global organization. This is an excellent opportunity for your professional growth in a dynamic, enthusiastic, and collaborative team where we work together and support each other. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills through hands-on experience, international collaboration, and exposure to cutting-edge technology in a rapidly evolving field.

We offer a generous benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), training, vacation, and personal/sick time.
