Job description

Company Summary

For over 60 years, Schellinger Construction has been building highways and roads across Montana. We work primarily in Northwest Montana and provide a full range of services, including earthwork, trucking, gravel crushing, concrete supply, aggregate surfacing, culvert/pipe installation, asphalt paving, and retail aggregate supply (gravel, asphalt). Job Summary

The Crushing Foreman is responsible for the supervision of a single crushing operation. This also includes the day-to-day operation of an individual crushing crew, which may include up to 8 crew members.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Crushing Foreman include, but are not limited to:

Operations & Supervision

  • Supervising single crushing operation and personnel: scheduling crew, making assignments and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving issues.
  • Understand crushing production and specification goals; assist with resolving operational problems & identifying work process improvements.
  • Provide input for gravel pit layout and set up processes, follow all landowner agreements.
  • Prioritizing and directing maintenance personnel on repairs of onsite equipment and crusher.
  • Price checking, selecting, and ordering required materials and supplies in accordance with established purchasing procedures. Determining and recommending additional equipment and tools requirements.
  • Inspecting site daily for potential hazards or safety concerns and MSHA compliance.
  • Have a thorough understanding of the plan for their individual crushing project, including specifications, equipment, manpower, quantities, quality control procedures, materials, safety and security practices, temporary utilities, and staging areas.

Communication, Teamwork & Administration

  • Perform communication and management activities of crew, particularly during stressful situations, in a respectful manner.
  • Collaborate with the Crushing Superintendent to prepare daily, weekly, and long-term plans.
  • Assist crew when needed e.g. operating crushing related equipment and crusher; set up/teardown of crusher.
  • Supervise the performance of the crushing crew, which includes helping with recruiting, new hire orientation, resolving and documenting performance issues, training & development, and providing/receiving feedback.
  • Work with the crushing maintenance crew to prioritize and complete equipment repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Coordinate with the designated mechanic responsible for ordering parts, to ensure that an adequate inventory of tools, parts, and services for equipment are on hand or made available in a timely manner.
  • Review project productivity and job costs.
  • Review and approve timecards, meet reporting requirements.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure that "Safety First" is understood and demonstrated; including conducting weekly crew safety meetings.
  • Enforce and comply with company safety policies, MSHA regulations, EEO policies, benefits and standard company procedures.
  • Participates in MSHA inspections. Conducts site-specific MSHA training and safety training.
  • Attend the annual foreman's meeting and participate in annual MSHA training.

Other Requirements

  • This is a union position. Previous crushing experience required.
  • Willing to travel.
  • Willing to work overtime.
  • A valid driver's license and a good MVR is required. CDL not required, but will be viewed favorably.
  • Wear appropriate protective equipment on job sites: safety-toed boots, hard hats, ear, and eye protection. Must also ensure crew members are complying with these regulations.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which will include inclement weather, heat and cold, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office's suite of products (Word, Excel, Outlook) is preferred.
  • Must comply with the company's drug and alcohol testing requirements.
