Independent Crop Consultant

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated Independent Crop Consultant to provide unbiased agronomic guidance and field management support to crop and livestock producers. This role combines regular field scouting, soil and crop analysis, input recommendations, precision agriculture, irrigation support, and farm data management.

The consultant will work directly with growers and their local suppliers to improve crop performance, soil health, input efficiency, and profitability. The ideal candidate has strong agronomic knowledge, communicates clearly, keeps accurate records, and can make practical recommendations based on field conditions and each producer's goals.

Key Responsibilities

Field Scouting and Crop Management

• Visit each enrolled field once per week during the growing season through crop maturity and provide a written or verbal field report.
• Scout crops for weeds, diseases, insects, nutrient deficiencies, plant-health concerns, and other production issues.
• Monitor crop growth stage, development, yield potential, and overall field conditions.
• Identify emerging concerns and promptly communicate practical corrective recommendations to clients.

Planting and Stand Evaluation

• Check soil temperature, planting depth, soil moisture, and seed spacing.
• Perform emergence evaluations and stand counts.
• Recommend appropriate seeding rates and seed populations based on field conditions, crop type, and production goals.
• Identify planting or emergence issues and recommend corrective action when appropriate.

Agronomic Recommendations

• Develop field-specific herbicide, fertilizer, pesticide, and seed-population recommendations.
• Prepare fertilizer and seed prescriptions using soil tests, field history, management zones, and production goals.
• Help clients select effective products and programs while considering resistance management, environmental stewardship, and cost per acre.
• Work with local suppliers to identify suitable products, programs, pricing, and application options.
• Remain current on new farming practices, technologies, products, and research.

Soil Sampling and Soil Health

• Complete annual soil sampling for each enrolled field as part of the standard per-acre service.
• Interpret soil-test results and translate findings into practical fertility and soil-management plans.
• Recommend cover crops and other practices that support soil structure, nutrient cycling, water management, and long-term soil health.

Farm Data and Management Services

• Manage and organize farm records, crop-production information, and precision-agriculture data.
• Analyze yield data and use the results to support future management decisions.
• Assist clients with digital agriculture platforms, including Climate or comparable systems.
• Maintain accurate field histories covering crop rotations, input applications, scouting findings, and yield performance.
• Support irrigation and watering decisions using crop stage, soil moisture, weather conditions, and field observations.
• Develop annual chemical plans and assist with pricing comparisons and input purchasing decisions.

Client Communication

• Build trusted, professional relationships while maintaining independence and objectivity.
• Deliver clear, timely, and actionable written reports following field visits.
• Explain agronomic findings and recommendations in practical terms.
• Coordinate with producers, applicators, seed representatives, laboratories, and local agricultural suppliers.
• Maintain client confidentiality and avoid recommendations influenced by commissions, product sales, or supplier relationships.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in agronomy, crop science, soil science, precision agriculture, agricultural systems, or a related field preferred.
• Relevant crop-consulting, farming, field-scouting, or agricultural retail experience may be considered in place of formal education.
• Strong knowledge of crop production, weed identification, crop diseases, insect pests, soil fertility, and plant nutrition.
• Ability to interpret soil tests, field observations, yield maps, and precision-agriculture data.
• Experience with fertilizer recommendations, seed prescriptions, crop-protection programs, and resistance-management principles.
• Familiarity with irrigated agriculture, forage production, livestock systems, or grazing management is beneficial.
• Strong written communication, organization, problem-solving, and client-service skills.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple fields and clients, and respond quickly during critical production periods.

Licenses and Requirements

• Valid driver's license and clean driving record
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions.
• Ability to walk uneven terrain and collect soil, crop, manure, lagoon, silage, and forage samples.
• Availability for extended or irregular hours during planting, spraying, irrigation, and harvest seasons.
• Certified Crop Adviser designation encouraged
