What You'll Doย ย 

Reporting to theย Commissioning Manager, the Seniorย Commissioning Technologist is responsible for commissioning, testing and maintaining primary and secondary power equipment in the field. This includesย maintainingย medium-to-high-voltage substation power delivery equipment such as breakers, switchgears, circuit breakers,ย relaysย and transformers. The Senior Commissioning Technologist role also involves mentoring and educatingย junior technologistsย including reading and interpreting prints, riskย managementย strategies and promoting industry best practices. The Seniorย Commissioning Technologist also plays a leading role in setting up and operating both standard and specialized test equipment to diagnose and analyze the performance of power delivery equipment on-site.ย 

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:ย ย 

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture alongside all members of the construction crewย 
  • Commission and test high voltage equipment such as Circuit breakers, Transformers, manual and motor operated switches, Current Transformers, Voltage Transformers, Capacitorย Banksย and circuit switchers.ย 
  • Commission protection and control relays such as SEL, GE,ย Siemensย and ABB.ย 
  • Commission control circuits for protection,ย indicationย and monitoring systems.ย 
  • Perform acceptance and maintenance testing on electrical equipment ranging from 600v to 500kV
  • Installation, commissioning and maintenance of protection and control equipment, including SCADA in medium to high-voltage transmission substations
  • Work with protection schemes such as differential, distance, line protections, transformer protections and overcurrent protections
  • Interpret electrical drawings and schematics, analyze test results, and recommend corrective actions
  • Work with high voltage equipment such as Circuit breakers, transformers, switches and control circuits for protection,ย indicationย and monitoring systemsย 
  • Supervise, mentor and train junior techniciansย 
  • Be able to work with various types of manufacturer's test equipment:
    • Omicron CMC356, CT analyzer, Cibano, CPC100, Votano, Testrano (remove the comma after Omicron as they are all Omicron devices).
    • Doble M4100, SFRA
    • Megger megohmmeter and 10A Ductor
    • Broman 100A Ductor
    • Megger TTR
    • Dilo and SMC Gas Analyzers
    • VLF and AC Hi Pots
    • Be able to work with various types of manufacturer's test equipment:

This is a full-time, permanent position.

  • Employees based in Calgary work locally within Southern Alberta, while those based in Edmonton work locally within Northern Alberta.
  • There are also opportunities to travel to other regions if interested.

This position isย designatedย as safety-sensitive making employment contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, as well as criminal and general background checks.ย 

Schedule & Compensation

  • Schedule rotations include 4 days on / 4 days offย orย 8 days on / 6 days off, etc.
  • Standard workdays are 10 hours (7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.)ย ย 
  • Overtime paid at time and a half after 10 hours per day and 40 hours per weekย ย 
  • Out-of-town work includes either all-inclusive camp accommodations or LOA and individual accommodations (project dependent)ย 

Requirements

What We're Looking Forย ย 

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution or Degree in Electrical Engineeringย 
  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience in Field Testing and Commissioningย 
  • Hands-on experience in substations (600V to 500kV) required
  • Familiar with power transformers, high voltage switches, breakers,ย CT'sย and PT's, NGR, andย Capbankย 
  • Experienceย with testing software is considered an asset (Omicron Test Universe, Doble M4000,ย AcSELerator, Siemensย Digsi, GEย Enervista)ย 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong commitment to safety, environmental, and health practices
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license required
  • Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Willing to travel and work out of town and on rotational schedules
