Job description

Description Burns & McDonnell's Water Practice in Denver, CO, is in search of an Environmental Engineer to support its growing municipal and industrial water and wastewater business. Founded in 1898, Burns & McDonnell is a 100% employee-owned firm.
The Environmental Engineer will be responsible for understanding, applying, designing, and constructing conventional and advanced water and wastewater treatment technologies.
The candidate will be responsible for process design and piping layout, pump station and lift station design, hydraulic profile development, process equipment selection, specification and drawing development, and construction administration for water and wastewater projects.
Additional duties include inter-discipline coordination, developing budgets and schedules, contributing to the technical growth of the group, staff mentoring, and supporting client development and client maintenance. Candidates at the senior level will be expected to serve as the lead technical resource on projects, mentor less-experienced engineers, and participate in identifying and obtaining new work.
Specific duties may include, but not be limited to the following:
  • Perform process and civil design of water and wastewater projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Develop and review design drawings, specifications, and technical calculations for treatment facilities, pump and lift stations, and conveyance and collection systems.
  • Perform hydraulic and process calculations to size unit processes, piping, and pumping systems.
  • Apply strong knowledge of commonly used environmental engineering concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the water and wastewater industry.
  • Prepare planning documents, alternatives analyses, basis of design reports, and technical memoranda; research and compile project related data as required by the project manager.
  • Support permitting and regulatory coordination with state and federal agencies, including drinking water and discharge permitting requirements.
  • Provide construction administration support, including submittal and shop drawing review, responses to requests for information, site observation, and startup and commissioning assistance.
  • Execute assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with multi-disciplinary project teams to produce deliverables that meet internal QA/QC requirements and client expectations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental or Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program and 3 years of related professional experience.
  • Or Bachelor of Science in Environmental or Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 3 years of related professional experience.
  • Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering may be substituted for 1 year of experience.
  • 5 years of water and/or wastewater engineering consulting experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in standard environmental engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, BIM (Revit), 3D rendering programs, and water and wastewater hydraulic, process, and environmental analysis programs.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful completion (i.e., passing) of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration in Colorado is a plus.
  • 8 or more years of water and/or wastewater design experience for consideration at the senior level.
  • Experience with conventional and advanced water and wastewater treatment technologies for municipal and industrial clients.
  • Experience leading design tasks, coordinating across disciplines, and mentoring less-experienced engineers.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain client relationships and support the pursuit of new work.

Compensation
$110,000.00-155,000.00 Yearly
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
