Job description

Do you want to be the person families can count on during a mental health crisis, helping youth find safety, stability, and hope during challenging moments?
About the Role
We're looking for a Crisis Counselor to provide brief, solution-focused mental health support to youth and families experiencing crisis. You'll work with children and families involved in San Francisco systems, including child welfare, SFUSD, and crisis services, providing interventions, stabilization, and case management in homes, schools, hospitals, and other community settings. You will partner with families and treatment team members to build safety, strengthen resilience, and connect youth to the support they need to remain safely in their communities.
About The Program
Seneca's San Francisco Hub team provides community-based mental health and crisis response services to support youth and families involved in the child welfare system, foster care services, and other San Francisco-based systems of care. Our goal is to strengthen permanency, support successful transitions, and address the mental health and behavioral needs of youth while helping them remain safely connected to their families and communities. Mobile response services are provided in homes, schools, hospitals, and other community settings, offering an alternative to unnecessary hospitalization or law enforcement involvement. Through crisis intervention, safety planning, and connection to ongoing resources, we help youth and families build stability, resilience, and long-term support.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide crisis management and intervention for youth referred by, but not limited to, the San Francisco child welfare system, San Francisco's Department of Public Health, SFUSD, and the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU)
  • Complete risk assessments, crisis counseling, creation of behavioral plans and safety plans
  • Participate in all treatment reviews, family team meetings and program staff meetings
  • Complete documentation identified by supervisor in a timely and satisfactory manner
  • Collaborate on a regular basis with team members including but not limited to: Child Welfare Workers, caregivers, school staff, therapists, and case managers
  • Participate in weekly individual supervision and group supervision to expand skills and receive ongoing coaching and support
  • Maintain professional behavior at all times, appropriately representing Seneca's mission and philosophy

Qualifications:
  • Education/Experience Requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree OR
    • Associate's degree or equivalent + 1 year of applicable experience OR
    • High School Diploma/GED + 2 years of applicable experience
    • Applicable experience can include paid or unpaid experience working with youth or families or working in the social services field
  • Own vehicle, Valid California driver's license required
  • Strong communication skills and flexibility
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • TB test clearance, fingerprinting clearance, and any other state/federal licensing or certification requirements
  • Preferred at least 9 months to 1-year experience in working with children with mental health needs in out of home care

Schedule:
  • Full time
    • Monday- Friday, 2:00pm - 10:00pm
  • On call 2-3 times a month through an on call pool
    • Emergency on-call stipend provided
