Crib Manager information

What is a crib manager?

Crib Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and maintaining inventory in a company's tool crib or storage area. They track the distribution, usage, and return of tools, equipment, and materials to ensure that workers have the supplies they need while minimizing loss and overstock. Their duties often include organizing the crib, maintaining records, managing inventory levels, and coordinating with other departments to fulfill requests efficiently. Crib Managers play a vital role in ensuring smooth operations in manufacturing, construction, and similar industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a crib manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crib Manager, you need strong organizational skills, inventory management experience, and familiarity with supply chain processes, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Proficiency with inventory management software, barcode systems, and basic Microsoft Office applications is commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are essential soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate inventory control, efficient distribution of tools and materials, and smooth operations within manufacturing or maintenance environments.

What are some common challenges faced by a crib manager and how can they be effectively managed?

Crib Managers often face challenges such as maintaining accurate inventory levels, ensuring timely distribution of tools and materials, and minimizing loss or damage. Effective management relies on implementing robust tracking systems, regularly auditing stock, and fostering clear communication with team members and other departments. Proactively addressing these challenges not only streamlines operations but also supports overall productivity and safety within the facility.

Job description

Title: Tool Crib & VMI Specialist (Field Service)

Location: Plymouth, MN (with 40% regional travel)

Salary Range: $28.00 - $32.00 / hour

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM

About the Role:

Are you an experienced Tool Crib Attendant, an Industrial Distributor Specialist (Fastenal, MSC, Grainger), or a Machinist looking to step away from physical machine operation into a technical, client-facing career?

If so, this is the perfect opportunity to leverage your cutting tool knowledge in a new direction. In this role, you will travel regionally (approx. 40% via car/airplane) to install, optimize, and maintain automated tool vending and inventory systems directly at our customer manufacturing facilities.

What We Offer:

- $28.00 - $32.00/hour (with annual performance & salary reviews)

- Day 1 Benefits: Excellent Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance

- 401(k) with Company Match

- Generous Paid Time Off (Holidays, Personal, & Vacation)

Key Responsibilities:

- Client-Site Audits: Assess, identify, and collect tooling inventory data at customer locations.

- System Installation: Lead or support the physical installation of automated tool-vending hardware, organize/label customer tooling, and establish inventory tracking databases using Excel.

- Customer Training: Provide professional, friendly on-site software training to client teams post-installation.

- Tech Support: Perform ongoing remote and on-site software maintenance and hardware support for vending machinery.

- Warehouse Backup: Provide localized support to our internal Tool Crib, delivery routes, and warehouse when not traveling.

What We Are Looking For:

- 3+ years of Tool Crib management, industrial inventory (VMI), or related machining/manufacturing environment experience.

- Strong Cutting Tool Literacy: Must easily identify common cutting tool types (inserts, end mills, drills, taps) and communicate using standard terminology.

- Tech & Excel Savvy: Proficient computer skills, including the ability to utilize Excel for organizing inventory data and maintaining basic software systems.

- Field-Ready & Client-Facing: Professional customer service skills with a friendly, outgoing personality.

- VMI Familiarity (A Plus!): Prior exposure to industrial vending or tool management software (Fast Track, Cribware, Tool Boss, Matrix, CribMaster, AutoCrib, etc.) is highly helpful but not required.

Requirements:

- Ability to travel up to 40% of the time via car or airplane.

- Valid Driver’s License with a clean, acceptable driving record.
