Creo Modeling information

What is Creo modeling?

Creo modeling refers to the process of creating 3D models and designs using Creo, a powerful computer-aided design (CAD) software developed by PTC. This software is widely used by engineers and product designers to create, analyze, and visualize complex parts and assemblies in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. Creo modeling allows users to efficiently develop detailed digital prototypes, facilitating design changes, simulation, and collaboration throughout the product development cycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creo modeling engineer?

To thrive as a Creo Modeling Engineer, strong proficiency in 3D CAD design, mechanical engineering fundamentals, and a relevant engineering degree are essential. Expertise in using PTC Creo software, along with familiarity with PLM systems and industry-standard design practices, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and translating concepts into manufacturable designs. These skills ensure the creation of accurate, efficient, and innovative product models that meet both technical and business needs.

What is the difference between Creo Modeling vs CAD Designer?

AspectCreo ModelingCAD Designer
Primary FocusCreating detailed 3D models using PTC Creo softwareDesigning 2D drawings and concepts, often using various CAD tools
Skills & CertificationsProficiency in Creo, CAD software, and 3D modelingKnowledge of CAD software, drafting standards, and design principles
Work EnvironmentEngineering firms, manufacturing, product developmentArchitectural, industrial, or product design firms
Industry UsageCommon in mechanical and product engineeringUsed across multiple design disciplines including architecture and industrial design

Creo Modeling specialists focus on creating detailed 3D models primarily using PTC Creo, essential for product development and engineering. CAD Designers often work on drafting and conceptual design across various industries. While both roles require CAD skills, Creo Modeling emphasizes 3D modeling expertise, whereas CAD Design may involve broader drafting and design tasks.

What are some common challenges faced by Creo modeling professionals in a collaborative engineering environment?

Creo Modeling professionals often encounter challenges such as managing complex assemblies, ensuring model consistency across team members, and resolving conflicts when multiple engineers work on shared designs. Coordinating with colleagues from different disciplines (like manufacturing and simulation) requires strong communication and version control practices to avoid errors or duplicated work. Staying updated on the latest Creo features and maintaining organized model structures are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth project workflows.

Role Overview

The Mechanical Design & Analysis Engineer is responsible for, but not limited to, design and manufacturing-related functions required by key strategic business unit account customers. This individual will work synergistically with Qnity's sales and manufacturing to achieve all customer design targets and goals.

This is a hybrid position requiring the selected candidate to work on-site three days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with internal and external engineers and/or customer service to develop customer-specific designs that are both the best technical solution and optimized for manufacturability

  • Analyze designs utilizing Abaqus CAE finite element analysis (FEA) or Ansys Forming, and internally developed tools, to provide analysis packages containing key data points needed to evaluate the effectiveness in the customer application

  • Create 3D models and 2D drawings of Laird products using SolidWorks or CREO 3D CAD

  • Create and control item data in the Aras database

  • Lead new item release activities, ensuring item design requirements meet manufacturing capabilities to fit customer-specific performance needs, board layout, and components

  • Act as subject matter expert for metals designs and manufacturability, supporting customer design for manufacturability (DFM) assessments and operations design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA)

  • Report production release (NIP) and design metrics

  • Support production in troubleshooting manufacturing challenges or issues

  • Proficient at learning new systems and sharing knowledge to ensure best practices and efficiencies

Requirements:

  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail

  • Proficient with solid-modeling software, preferable CREO or Solidworks, and/or mechanical/electrical or multiphysics software such as Abaqus, HFSS, or COMSOL

  • Understanding of Finite Element Analysis or Finite Difference numerical modeling techniques, preferably with a history of analyzing boundary value problems and results

  • Understanding of the cross-functional relationships between intercompany groups and the various expertises required to take a product through development to production

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written

  • Ability/experience being an extension of OEM design teams from the system to component level

  • Extensive mechanical design experience

  • Ability/experience understanding electronic system architecture at least at the block diagram level

  • Experience proactively engaging customers, organizing intercompany meetings, and maintaining business relationships across commercial and technical functions.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or technical field.

  • Experience/knowledge in manufacturing processes preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience around precision metals, board-level shields, and EMI solutions

  • 8+ years of design experience.

Why this role?
  • Design from concept to reality - Partner with Field Application Engineers and customers to develop custom metal components and innovative solutions, often starting with limited requirements or initial design inputs.

  • Solve complex engineering challenges - Apply your expertise in sheet metal design, 3D modeling, and CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Creo to create products that meet customer performance and manufacturing requirements.

  • Expand your technical capabilities - Gain hands-on experience with engineering analysis, simulation, and finite element analysis (FEA) tools used to evaluate product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Make a direct customer impact - Work on custom development projects that help customers solve real-world challenges, collaborating closely with engineering, manufacturing, and commercial teams from concept through production.
