What is credit risk data science?

Credit Risk Data Science is a specialized field that uses statistical analysis, machine learning, and data modeling techniques to assess and predict the likelihood that a borrower will default on a loan or credit obligation. Professionals in this field analyze large datasets from financial transactions, credit reports, and market trends to develop models that help financial institutions make informed lending decisions. Their work helps manage risk, set appropriate interest rates, and comply with regulatory standards. By leveraging advanced analytics, credit risk data scientists play a crucial role in minimizing losses and maximizing profitability for banks and lenders.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a credit risk data scientist?

To thrive as a Credit Risk Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistical modeling, and a solid background in finance, mathematics, or a related field, often supported by an advanced degree. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, experience with machine learning frameworks, and knowledge of credit risk modeling tools such as SAS or SQL are typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with stakeholders. These abilities are crucial for building accurate risk models, informing strategic decisions, and ensuring regulatory compliance in financial institutions.

How does a credit risk data scientist typically collaborate with other teams within a financial institution?

Credit Risk Data Scientists often work closely with credit analysts, risk managers, and IT professionals to develop, validate, and implement models that assess borrower risk. They frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to translate complex analytical findings into actionable business insights. Collaboration with compliance and regulatory teams is also common to ensure that risk models meet current regulatory standards. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the role bridges technical model development and practical risk management decisions.

Job description

We believe that the way people interact with their finances will drastically improve in the next few years. We're dedicated to empowering this transformation by building the tools and experiences that thousands of developers use to create their own products. Plaid powers the tools millions of people rely on to live a healthier financial life. We work with thousands of companies like Venmo, SoFi, several of the Fortune 500, and many of the largest banks to make it easy for people to connect their financial accounts to the apps and services they want to use. Plaid's network covers 12,000 financial institutions across the US, Canada, UK and Europe. Founded in 2013, the company is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in New York, Washington D.C., London and Amsterdam.

Our team

Our Credit team mission is to power access to more affordable credit products. We believe that bank data is the missing piece of the puzzle when it comes to credit. We empower consumers to share data that helps create a more holistic financial picture, and we provide lenders the tools to streamline their credit decisions.

What excites you

As a Staff Business Analyst on the Credit team, you will build bespoke solutions for customers using cash flow-based insights within credit decisioning.

You will own the process for translating Plaid's credit insights into practical, hands-on recommendations for lenders. You will work closely with customers and cross-functional partners to help improve adoption of Plaid insight data, shape customer-specific solutions, and serve as a subject matter expert on credit policy implementation.

This role is well suited for someone with deep credit risk expertise who can connect underwriting strategy, data-driven decisioning, and customer needs to drive better lending outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Own the process for creating hands-on recommendations for incorporating cash flow insights into lending decisions, using best practices for account-level decisioning
  • Improve customer usage of Plaid insight data through adoption of custom solutions tailored to specific customer needs
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on Plaid's credit insights and credit policy implementation in support of Data Science, Engineering, and Go-to-Market teams
  • Translate lender objectives and credit strategies into actionable decisioning recommendations
  • Partner cross-functionally to ensure Plaid's credit solutions are practical, scalable, and impactful for customers
  • Help customers optimize how they use alternative data across the lending lifecycle
Qualifications
  • 6-10 years of relevant experience in business analysis, credit risk, underwriting, or a related function
  • Deep understanding of credit risk and the development of underwriting models
  • Hands-on credit expertise building and maintaining real-world credit policies for lenders
  • Knowledge of the lending lifecycle and how to optimize each step, including marketing, acquisitions, customer management, and collections or recoveries
  • Demonstrated ability to make data-driven decisions
  • Nice to have: experience applying cash flow-based underwriting or alternative data within consumer or SMB lending

Our mission at Plaid is to unlock financial freedom for everyone. To support that mission, we seek to build a diverse team of driven individuals who care deeply about making the financial ecosystem more equitable. We recognize that strong qualifications can come from both prior work experiences and lived experiences. We encourage you to apply to a role even if your experience doesn't fully match the job description. We are always looking for team members that will bring something unique to Plaid!

Plaid is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and values diversity at our company. We do not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religion or religious belief, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, transgender status, sexual stereotypes, age, military or veteran status, disability, or other applicable legally protected characteristics. Additional compensation in the form(s) of equity and/or commission are dependent on the position offered. Plaid provides a comprehensive benefit plan, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
