Duties
In addition to adhering to the general staff guidelines as specified by the AMSTI Director, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Services, the In-service Center Director, and the State Board of Education, AMSTI and AMSTI-ASIM Content Specialist responsibilities include the following:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING:
  • Facilitate and/or participate in professional learning for teachers and administrators based on assignments and/or LEA needs, including online options
  • Assist AMSTI-ALSDE in developing and maintaining standardized, pre-approved professional learning opportunities and supporting resources for AMSTI and/or for the ALSDE, including online options, and submit them to ALSDE for approval
  • Provide ongoing professional learning to AMSTI/AMSTI-ASIM lead teachers, certified AMSTI facilitators, and instructional coaches
  • Assist IHEs with planning and conducting pre-service education, continuing education, and outreach activities
  • Participate in AMSTI/AMSTI-ASIM professional learning activities and staff meetings conducted by the ALSDE and sited director, unless prior approval for absence is granted

EDUCATOR SUPPORT:
  • Provide frequent, ongoing support and coaching to teachers, AMSTI/AMSTI-ASIM lead teachers, certified AMSTI facilitators, coaches, and/or administrators based on assignments and/or LEA needs (in situations where the specialist is leading the classroom or team-teaching, the classroom teacher must always be present)
  • Assist AMSTI/AMSTI-ASIM teachers in effectively using common planning time and Professional Learning Communities to improve instruction
  • Assist in recruiting new AMSTI/AMSTI-ASIM teachers and/or facilitators
  • Research the effects of current math, science, and/or technology practices in AMSTI/AMSTI-ASIM classrooms, as requested by AMSTI-ALSDE
  • Coordinate work through the AMSTI site director, collaborate with other specialists, and communicate with all stakeholders
  • Achieve and maintain proficiency in all standards, pedagogical and content knowledge, and AMSTI/AMSTI-ASIM lessons and practices through AMSTI-ALSDE and approved outside professional learning opportunities, based on the requirements

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES:
  • Work with general and materials managers to make site-level decisions based on teacher needs and requests
  • Provide feedback to AMSTI- ALSDE regarding customization of kits and resources to make them teacher and classroom-friendly

GENERAL DUTIES:
  • Maintain records (including financial) and complete paperwork in a timely manner, utilizing structures in Monday.com
  • Participate in the development, maintenance, and promotion of AMSTI/AMSTI-ASIM resources according to the resource development and PR guidelines
  • Communicate with AMSTI site director/PI and AMSTI-ALSDE in advance regarding plans for retirement or resignation plans (under normal circumstances, a minimum of six-month advance notice is requested)
  • Specialist responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed in all categories above; specialists may be required to perform other duties as assigned by the AMSTI site director or AMSTI-ALSDE

Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, STANDARDS, AND TRAINING:
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in the specific subject area and grade level of the position in an Alabama public school
  • AMSTI and/or AMSTI-ASIM training must be current and correspond to the subject area and grade span of the position
  • Knowledge of PC systems and a variety of software
  • Skill in time and project management
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including oral, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to bring creative and innovative solutions to problems and demonstrate a commitment to teamwork and service
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Ability to move a minimum of 50 pounds

REQUIRED LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, OR SPECIAL CREDENTIALS
  • Valid Alabama Teachers' Certification required
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Clear status with FBI and ABI fingerprinting process

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS:
AMSTI Elementary Math and/or Science
  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education required; Master's degree or higher in Education preferred
  • Valid Alabama Teachers' Certification in Early Childhood or Elementary Education
  • AMSTI MATH and/or SCIENCE trainer certification preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Ability to ascend and/or descend a ladder to access materials in the AMSTI warehouse
  • Ability to move self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and/or confined spaces
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position, such as standing and/or sitting, for a prolonged period of time
  • Occasionally perform duties that require low postures such as crouching, kneeling, and/or stooping.
  • Ability to adjust or move up to 50 pounds
  • Frequently communicate with others to exchange information
  • Frequently tasked with repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, such as operating a computer and other office productivity machinery
  • Operate a motor vehicle when needed
  • Frequently tasked with using near vision for the use of the computer and reading small print

Salary Schedule
Salary will be based on degree, experience and the AMSTI salary schedule. This is a 11-month contract. Future employment is contingent upon AMSTI funding. Benefits available as appropriate for sponsored programs.
