What is creative retouching?

Creative retouching is a specialized process in digital image editing where retouchers enhance, manipulate, or transform photographs to achieve a specific artistic vision. Unlike basic retouching, which focuses on correcting flaws or imperfections, creative retouching may involve compositing multiple images, altering backgrounds, adding visual effects, or dramatically changing the mood and style of a photo. This role is common in advertising, fashion, and editorial photography, where high-impact visuals are essential. Creative retouchers work closely with photographers, art directors, and clients to bring their concepts to life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative retoucher?

To thrive as a Creative Retoucher, you need advanced skills in image editing, color correction, and composition, typically supported by a strong portfolio and a background in photography or graphic design. Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and sometimes Capture One or similar software is essential, along with familiarity with industry-standard file formats. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication with clients and team members are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure polished, visually compelling images that meet client specifications and uphold brand standards.

How does a creative retoucher typically collaborate with photographers and art directors during a project?

Creative Retouchers work closely with photographers and art directors to bring their visual concepts to life. Collaboration often begins with a project briefing, where the desired mood, style, and key elements are discussed. Throughout the editing process, retouchers provide draft images and incorporate feedback to ensure that the final result aligns with the creative vision. Regular communication and the ability to interpret and execute creative direction are essential for success in this role.

What is the difference between Creative Retouching vs Photo Editing?

Job description

Berlin or Munich Full-Time Hybrid 3+ years of experience

About Us

We are Effekt-Etage. Since 2003, we've worked at the intersection of marketing, technology, and production. We merge CGI and AI into a single pipeline. We call it CGAI. We're more than content production: we support brands across the entire value chain – from data-driven strategy and creative concepting to cloud and enterprise solutions. From photorealistic stills and film to configurators and immersive experiences, we produce for Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Toyota, Volkswagen, and many more. TISAX and ISO 9001 certified.

For this, we're looking for someone who can do both: top-level post-production – and a real feel for how AI makes day-to-day production faster, smarter, and more scalable.

What you'll do

Compositing and retouching of stills and motion content in the automotive space – from raw render to final look.

Grading and look development that hit brand CI and premium standards.

Multipass compositing in Nuke, fine detail work in Photoshop, color and finishing in DaVinci Resolve.

Integrate AI firmly into your creative workflow: more output, more variants, and new creative options – not as a replacement for craft.

Close collaboration with our CGAI Supervisor and our creatives.

Ensure consistently high quality – and continuously improve processes.

What you'll bring

At least 3 years of professional experience in post-production, a VFX studio, or an agency.

Highly proficient in Photoshop, Nuke, and DaVinci Resolve.

Confident working with current AI tools – and the curiosity to keep yourself constantly up to date.

A sharp eye for high-quality content; you see the difference between good and really good.

Experience in the automotive sector.

Excellent communication – you can explain what you do and why.

An independent, structured, and solution-oriented way of working.

What we offer

Projects for the most exciting brands in the automotive world – VW Group, BMW Group, Hyundai Motor Group.

A hand in shaping one of the most advanced CGAI pipelines in the industry – you'll help build the future of post-production.

Top hardware and up-to-date tool licenses – Nuke, DaVinci, Adobe CC, and a growing AI stack.
