What is the difference between Creative Retouching vs Photo Editing?

AspectCreative RetouchingPhoto Editing
Skills & ToolsAdvanced Photoshop techniques, artistic visionBasic adjustments, cropping, color correction
Work EnvironmentAdvertising, fashion, commercial photographyEveryday photography, personal projects
PurposeEnhance aesthetics, create artistic effectsImprove image quality, correct flaws

Creative Retouching focuses on artistic enhancement and complex edits to produce visually striking images, often for commercial or fashion purposes. Photo Editing involves more straightforward adjustments to improve overall image quality. While both require Photoshop skills, Creative Retouching demands a higher level of artistic skill and creativity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creative Retoucher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Retoucher, you need advanced skills in image editing, color correction, and composition, typically supported by a strong portfolio and a background in photography or graphic design. Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and sometimes Capture One or similar software is essential, along with familiarity with industry-standard file formats. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication with clients and team members are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure polished, visually compelling images that meet client specifications and uphold brand standards.

How does a Creative Retoucher typically collaborate with photographers and art directors during a project?

Creative Retouchers work closely with photographers and art directors to bring their visual concepts to life. Collaboration often begins with a project briefing, where the desired mood, style, and key elements are discussed. Throughout the editing process, retouchers provide draft images and incorporate feedback to ensure that the final result aligns with the creative vision. Regular communication and the ability to interpret and execute creative direction are essential for success in this role.

What is creative retouching?

Creative retouching is a specialized process in digital image editing where retouchers enhance, manipulate, or transform photographs to achieve a specific artistic vision. Unlike basic retouching, which focuses on correcting flaws or imperfections, creative retouching may involve compositing multiple images, altering backgrounds, adding visual effects, or dramatically changing the mood and style of a photo. This role is common in advertising, fashion, and editorial photography, where high-impact visuals are essential. Creative retouchers work closely with photographers, art directors, and clients to bring their concepts to life.

Your Role
Seeking a collaborative, upbeat Senior Graphic Designer with 5-7 years of experience (ideally in retail) who brings both strong craft and a proactive, solutions oriented mindset. Reporting to the Senior Art Director, this role is responsible for concepting and executing store windows, in store Beauty and Lingerie marketing, direct mail, and a range of print initiatives. Your Impact
  • Support the team in the design, concept, and execution of in-store marketing needs
  • Prepare accurate, press-ready final files and ensure smooth handoff to production
  • Lead the creation of in-person presentation materials - including printing, trimming, mounting, and helping set up mock store reviews. This person must be local to the Columbus area.
  • Collaborate closely with creative leads, retouching, visual merchandising, copywriting, traffic, and production teams.
  • Responsible for preparing marketing decks for presentations
  • Maintain brand consistency across all touchpoints while contributing fresh, thoughtful creative ideas

  • Proficient in Microsoft Keynote (program used for all presentation decks to leaders)
  • Experience in releasing imagery for retouching a plus
  • Hands-on experience with presentation production (printing, trimming, mounting)
  • Highly collaborative, positive, and solutions-oriented mindset - someone who brings energy and initiative to every project
  • High communication skills and the ability to present work clearly and confidently
  • Detail-driven, organized, and comfortable juggling multiple priorities
