What is a creative project manager?

A creative project manager oversees all the elements of a creative project. These creative projects usually fall under the marketing department, but there are opportunities in other sections of a company. As a creative project manager, your job duties are to shape the ideas of the project, define clear goals and objectives in consultation with other departments, organize your team, and keep them on task. The creative project manager needs to maintain a balance between allowing the creative talent freedom to explore ideas while still making sure the team meets deadlines and creates a strong project, so you need excellent interpersonal and negotiations skills for this career.

How does a creative project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Creative Project Manager serves as a bridge between creative teams, such as designers and copywriters, and other departments like marketing, product, and client services. They facilitate communication by clearly outlining project goals, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring everyone is aligned. Regular check-ins, status updates, and collaborative meetings are common, allowing the manager to address any blockers quickly and keep the project on track. This collaborative structure fosters a dynamic environment where feedback and ideas flow openly, ensuring that creative outputs meet both strategic objectives and client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Project Manager, you need strong project management abilities, experience in creative industries, and typically a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Wrike, and design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, is highly valued. Exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills help you coordinate teams and manage client expectations effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality creative projects on time and within budget while maintaining strong team collaboration.

VMG Studios

Job description

About the Role

VMG is looking for a Creative Project Producer who can help deliver great work for enterprise clients while building real relationships with both clients and creative teams. This person brings a broad creative understanding across video, animation, design, and digital assets, along with enough agency experience to understand the pace, collaboration, and flexibility this work requires.

This is a process-driven role for someone who is also comfortable navigating ambiguity. We’re looking for someone with a flexible, curious mindset and enough creative fluency to spot potential issues early, ask the right questions at the right moments, and keep the work moving.

VMG is genuinely AI-forward, from how we plan projects to how we produce them. We’re looking for someone who shares that curiosity and is excited to explore how AI can support smarter, faster, and more thoughtful creative work.

What You'll Actually Do
  • Serve as the day-to-day point of contact for assigned clients, understanding their goals and translating them into clear, workable production plans.
  • Build and maintain detailed workback schedules across video, animation, design, and digital asset deliverables, flagging risks before they become problems.
  • Track project time, maintain accurate status reporting, and reconcile expenses against budget with minimal oversight.
  • Review work-in-progress including cuts, comps, storyboards, and builds with enough craft fluency to catch issues, brief drift, or quality gaps, then route decisions to the Creative Director or client rather than deciding unilaterally.
  • Lead live-action shoots end to end, including hiring and managing crew, and serve as the primary point of contact for clients on set.
  • Coordinate resourcing and handoffs across designers, animators, and editors so nothing stalls while waiting on a decision or asset.
  • Work fluently with the AI tools already in our producer and production workflows, including ChatGPT and custom GPTs, Claude for project plans and workflow builds, Eddie AI, Eleven Labs, Vectorizer AI, and Adobe Firefly. Stay genuinely curious about new tools and workflows as they emerge, and bring informed recommendations back to the team.
What Makes Someone Right for This
  • 5+ years of experience producing creative projects, ideally in an agency, studio, or in-house creative environment.
  • Experience working with enterprise-level clients and the polish, communication, and follow-through that comes with it.
  • Comfortable running a set, including hiring and leading crew, managing the day’s schedule, and keeping clients confidently informed on location.
  • Previous agency experience, so you already understand the pace, rhythm, and moving pieces of agency work.
  • Exceptionally organized and detail-oriented. You catch the thing before it becomes a fire.
  • Comfortable with the administrative backbone of the job, including time tracking, status reporting, and expense reconciliation, and you do it consistently, not as an afterthought.
  • A genuinely excellent communicator, written and verbal, with strong client-service instincts.
  • Broad working knowledge of creative production workflows across multiple disciplines, enough to know what a healthy handoff looks like and where things typically break, without needing to be the domain expert in every craft.
  • Calm and capable under pressure, backed by the preparation and communication that keeps most problems small.
  • Process-driven, but comfortable navigating ambiguity when a project doesn’t fit the standard playbook. Flexible and genuinely curious rather than rigid.
  • Clear about the line between recommending and deciding. You have opinions, you share them, and you respect that the Creative Director and client have final say.
  • Curious about AI tools and emerging workflows, with a practical eye for where they genuinely help and where they don’t yet. Hands-on experience with ChatGPT and custom GPTs, Claude, Eddie AI, Eleven Labs, Vectorizer AI, or Adobe Firefly is a plus, not a requirement.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with eLearning production, including familiarity with standards like SCORM.
  • Familiarity with 3D workflows and pipelines.
  • Experience with branding projects, from identity systems to brand guidelines.
  • Experience with localization workflows, including vendor coordination, language versioning, and QA.

Who VMG Is

VMG Studios is an Emmy-winning creative agency working across video, animation, design, eLearning, branding, and digital assets for major enterprise brands. Our work often includes complex moving pieces, from creative strategy and production to localization and versioning, so we value people who bring clarity, strong judgment, and calm momentum to the process.

At VMG, producers play an important role in keeping creative work clear, organized, and moving forward. You’ll be trusted for your judgment, communication, and ability to bring the right people into the right conversations at the right time.
