Job description

Copywriter & Editorial Assistant (Art & Culture for Social/Digital)

Digital Counsel is looking for a copywriter with a strong grasp of the language and energy of the contemporary art worldโ€”someone who can translate complex ideas into clear, concise, engaging, and culturally fluent content across digital platforms.

Research and clarity are at the core of your process; you know how to make new and innovative concepts feel immediate, relevant, and shareable across diverse audiences. Ability to tailor language, word count, and tone for institutional, public, or social contexts is essential.

One day you might be synthesizing the themes of a major video art exhibition into a clear, compelling 500-word feature, the next drafting an IG Reel script for the opening of a major international biennial, composing an op-ed in collaboration with a leading curator, or ghostwriting a Substack exploring the impact of public art. Meanwhile, you'll keep tabs on various social campaigns and articles in production, communicating status and feedback to key stakeholders in real-time.

You'll work closely with our accounts and creative teamsโ€”collaborating with designers, strategists, and an Editor. Your primary focus will be the development of messaging, copy, and tone of voice for cross-channel content to support broader communications goals. In addition, you will coordinate the production of editorial articles, including contributing to pitch meetings, commissioning external writers and critics, editing, and project managing drafts through publication on web and social. This role requires versatility and exactness: from quick-turn social captions and email newsletters to copy within visual assets, digital ads, Q&As, coordinating multiple editorial projects at once, and more.

We are open to both part- and full-time candidates for a contract role, with a trial period arranged before a potential transition into a full-benefits position beginning January 1, 2026. Salary range is $54,000 - $72,000 based on experience and schedule.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Write and refine copy for digital channels, including organic and paid social media content, short-form video scripts, artist profiles, project and exhibition descriptions, editorial features, interviews, SEO-optimized content, newsletters, and marketing decks.
  • Collaborate closely with artists, writers, editors, and designers to produce digital campaigns and editorial content that reflect a range of authentic voices.
  • Coordinate the production and editing of editorial commissions, essays, and reviews; incorporate feedback through multiple rounds of revision.
  • Manage web and digital publishing using a CMS; ensure quality control before content goes live.
  • Contribute written insights to client decks and reports as needed.
  • Demonstrate versatility in writing, shifting tone and style between institutional, public, and dynamic social contexts.
  • Uphold rigorous standards for clarity, accuracy, and brand voice across all communications.
  • Conduct thorough research to ensure content is informed, engaging, and accessible to diverse audiences.
  • Proactively communicate and collaborate with internal and external partners, incorporating feedback constructively and meeting deadlines reliably.
  • Maintain attention to detail in copyediting and publishing, with a commitment to consistency and excellence.
  • Bring a collaborative spirit and adaptability to a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of professional digital copywriting experience, ideally within a creative agency, arts, or cultural marketing setting.
  • Deep knowledge of contemporary art and culture, with fluency in both fast-turn social and long-form editorial formats.
  • Familiarity with CMS, email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Klayvio), Google Analytics, Meta Business Suite, and project management tools (Airtable, Basecamp)
  • Strong organizational skills and experience managing multiple deadlines.
  • Portfolio demonstrating writing for art, culture, or related fieldsโ€”social campaigns, editorial work, and digital storytelling.
Bonus
  • Experience commissioning or editing art/culture writing.
  • Interested in content creation and social media.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing tools (e.g., Figma, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Awareness of accessibility and SEO best practices.
