What are we looking for in a Medical Assistant?
Medical Assistants provides a variety of clinical and administrative duties to support the delivery of other clinical services.
Medical Assistant duties may include:
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH GROUPS:
โ€ข Conducts behavioral health groups following agency guidelines and policies.
โ€ข Leads groups using effective group facilitation skills that promote participation and interaction among group members.
โ€ข Utilizes group process to develop insight, practice skills, and motivate client for change.
โ€ข Follows lesson plan or curriculum and connects presented material to individual treatment plan goals.
CHILDREN, YOUTH and YOUNG ADULT SERVICES:
โ€ข Demonstrates and utilizes knowledge of development in children, youth and young adults.
โ€ข Demonstrates and utilizes knowledge and understanding of behavioral health problems in children, youth and young adults.
โ€ข Demonstrates and utilizes knowledge of and ability to work with issues of confidentiality, consent and capacity.
โ€ข Demonstrates the ability to collaborate and coordinate with family, parents, caregivers and community and natural supports.
โ€ข Communicates effectively with children and youth of differing ages and developmental levels.
CRISIS EVALUATION/INTERVENTION:
โ€ข Utilizes appropriate crisis intervention techniques for client stabilization.
โ€ข Accurately screens for risk to self, others, property, and the presence of grave disability and notifies the nurse/provider on shift.
โ€ข Documents and reports and/or notifies as required by law.
โ€ข Applies QPRT (Question, Persuade, Refer or Treat) principles in assessing risk and in safety and treatment planning.
โ€ข Implements and documents safety plans.
GERIATRIC SERVICES:
โ€ข Demonstrates and utilizes knowledge of normal aging process and age related changes.
โ€ข Demonstrates an understanding of neurocognitive disorders and their impacts on functioning.
โ€ข Demonstrates awareness of how medical issues can affect mental status.
INJECTIONS:
โ€ข Notifies nurse on shift that client is receiving an injection and will require assessment and monitoring.
โ€ข Uses Standard Precautions and performs hand hygiene before and after administering an injection.
โ€ข Verifies the medication order on the MAR matches the order on the Physician Order Form.
โ€ข Practices the Five Rights of Medication Administration.
โ€ข Demonstrates clean, safe, and proper technique; appropriate PPE, hand hygiene and administration.
โ€ข Discards the needle and syringe in the appropriate receptacle.
โ€ข Documents the injection, including injection site in both the MAR and Electronic Health Record.
MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION:
โ€ข Demonstrates understanding of scope of practice and when direct versus immediate supervision is required.
โ€ข Utilizes nurse on shift as a resource for making decisions regarding PRN administration and effectiveness.
โ€ข Safely administers and documents medication according to provider orders and agency policies.
โ€ข Encourages and supports clients in taking medications as prescribed. Promotes illness self-management skills.
SERVICE NOTES:
โ€ข Completes all required service notes according to Comprehensive Healthcare's guidelines, policies and procedures regarding format, content and timeliness.
โ€ข Language used in service notes is respectful, clear, descriptive, concise and client-centered.
โ€ข Service notes accurately depict treatment modalities and interventions provided within the clinician's scope of practice and according to treatment plan.
โ€ข Service notes accurately reflect and depict client status and progress consistent with assessment and reassessment data, problem statements and treatment plan goals and objectives.
VENIPUNCTURE:
โ€ข Verifies active physician order.
โ€ข Demonstrates understanding of the equipment and the ability to gather the needed equipment to obtain a sample.
โ€ข Demonstrates clean, safe and proper technique with hand hygiene and personal protective equipment.
โ€ข Can successfully obtain a sample following agency policies and procedures.
โ€ข Discards of needle, syringe and all other equipment in appropriate receptacle.
โ€ข Appropriately labels tubes immediately after obtaining sample.
โ€ข Demonstrates an understanding of how to use a centrifuge and what samples require spinning.
โ€ข Demonstrates an understanding of storage and shelf life of samples.
โ€ข Understands available resources.
โ€ข Demonstrates the ability to schedule a courier for sample pick up.
VITALS:
โ€ข Demonstrates the ability to correctly take a client's blood pressure and pulse with the machine and manually.
โ€ข Demonstrates how to correctly measure client's weight and height.
โ€ข Documents client's vitals in electronic health record.
โ€ข Notifies nurse and/or provider if client's vitals are not within normal limits.
Other duties may include:
  • Meets with client at intake and completes all paperwork except the treatment recommendations and physical assessment.
  • Accurately completes lab slips.
  • Assists with client education as per the provider's or nurse's directions.
  • Accurately obtains prior authorizations from client payors
  • Retrieves requested data, such as results from medical procedures or lab tests, and follows up as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Current certification for Medical Assistant in Washington (MA-C
  • Must have valid driver's license and vehicle liability insurance
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Food Worker Card
