 Crafts Instructor


Reports to – Activities Manager


Position Summary – The primary role of the Crafts Instructor is to assist the Activities Manager in the programs and activities conducted for Colony Retirement residents, particularly craft projects.


Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Training – High School diploma or equivalent required.  Experience with the elderly preferred. Knowledge and experience with craft instruction helpful.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities –Strong interpersonal skills including having a helpful and patient nature. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing, particularly during emergencies. Clean and professional presentation a must. Requires ability to focus on details and multitask as situations demand. Valid license or ability to travel to different locations. Ability to work with a group of people who may have diverse personalities and capabilities.  Empathetic to the needs and behaviors of people as they cope with the aging process. Energetic and promotes a positive and optimistic outlook when dealing with residents.  Able to work effectively with the Activities Coordinator in developing and implementing a variety of programs and activities designed to engage elderly residents. 


Job Responsibilities* – those responsibilities italicized below are considered essential functions.

  1. Conduct craft classes providing appropriate instruction and hands-on assistance, as needed.
  2. Ensure that programs and activities are conducted in a safe manner so that they provide no hazards to residents or Colony personnel.
  3. Make sure adequate supplies are on hand. When supplies are low, forward list of needed supplies to supervisor, or order or pick up directly as directed.
  4. Accompany residents on day trips, if required.
  5. Maintains confidentiality of resident and employee information.
  6. Keep the supervisor adequately informed of any issues of concern.
  7. Stay on top of developments in the field.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Work Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Position is hourly. 20 hours per week. Occasional need for additional hours.  Hours generally during typical business hours (8am-6pm).  Hours in office and apartment building setting.
  • Requires ability to move about where the program or activity is being conducted.
  • May require occasional lifting of supplies, generally 20 pounds.
  • Some activities may require physical dexterity and close visual acuity with handling of craft materials, e.g., scissors, pencils, pens, brushes, etc.
  • Repetitive movements may be required.
  • Requires ability to concentrate during regular, noisy periods.
