Job description

Microbiology Technologist

This full-time opportunity is in the Microbiology Department of Clinical Pathology Laboratories (CPL) in Austin, Texas. We are seeking a Microbiology Technologist to work with the Bacteriology team on first shift (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM) with rotating weekends.

In This Role, You Will:

  • Perform high-complexity microbiological testing on clinical specimens such as urine, blood, sputum, wounds, and body fluids
  • Read and interpret culture media, distinguishing clinically significant pathogens from contaminants or normal flora
  • Identify microorganisms using manual and automated biochemical methodologies
  • Perform antibiotic susceptibility testing to determine appropriate treatment options
  • Analyze, review, and report microbiology test results, ensuring timely communication of critical findings
  • Recognize and troubleshoot issues or unexpected results, implementing corrective actions effectively
  • Comply with laboratory safety protocols, quality control standards, and regulatory guidelines

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor degree or higher in a biological, medical, or laboratory science
  • Proficiency in operating general laboratory equipment, including telephones, computers, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes, and audible alarms
  • Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
  • A willingness to learn new techniques and technologies, with enthusiasm for continuous professional development

Bonus Points If You Have:

  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) in Microbiology or Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent)
  • 1+ years of experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory
  • Clinical laboratory training or experience in high-complexity testing
