Cpg Startup information

What is a CPG startup?

A CPG startup is a new company focused on developing, producing, and selling consumer packaged goods such as food, beverages, household products, or personal care items. These startups often introduce innovative products or business models to disrupt traditional markets and appeal to changing consumer preferences. CPG startups face unique challenges, including supply chain management, branding, and scaling distribution. Their success typically depends on agility, effective marketing, and the ability to adapt quickly to trends. Many CPG startups leverage e-commerce and direct-to-consumer channels to reach their target market.

What are some common challenges faced when working at a CPG startup, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Working at a CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) startup often means adapting to a fast-paced, ever-changing environment where roles may overlap and priorities can shift quickly. New hires may face challenges such as limited resources, rapid scaling demands, and the need to wear multiple hats—ranging from product development to marketing and sales support. To succeed, it's helpful to be proactive, flexible, and comfortable with ambiguity. Building strong cross-functional relationships and being open to continuous learning will help you navigate the startup landscape and contribute meaningfully to growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPG startup founder or leader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a leader in a CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) startup, you need a strong understanding of product development, market analysis, supply chain management, and ideally a background in business or entrepreneurship. Familiarity with tools like inventory management systems, e-commerce platforms, and data analytics software, as well as certifications in areas like food safety (if applicable), are often necessary. Exceptional creativity, resilience, networking abilities, and communication skills help you navigate challenges, attract investors, and build strong teams. These skills are critical for driving growth, maintaining operational efficiency, and standing out in a highly competitive market.

About the Company
Create Wellness is a fast-growing consumer packaged goods (CPG) startup building an exciting portfolio of creatine products. As we scale our business, we're looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Accounting Manager to build and maintain a strong financial foundation and help support the company's continued growth.
This is an ideal opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced startup environment, is comfortable wearing multiple hats, and wants meaningful ownership over the accounting function.
About the Role
The Accounting Manager will be responsible for managing the company's day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, and helping establish scalable processes and controls as the business grows.
The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting skills, experience with inventory and COGS, and an understanding of the unique accounting needs of a CPG or consumer products business. You'll work closely with Finance, Operations, Supply Chain, Sales, and external partners to ensure the financial data accurately reflects the business.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
  • Own the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, prepaids, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reporting.
  • Ensure financial records are accurate, complete, and maintained in accordance with GAAP.
  • Identify and resolve accounting discrepancies and improve reporting accuracy and efficiency.

Retail Accounting & Trade Management
  • Manage and reconcile accounting activity related to retail customers, distributors, and other sales channels.
  • Partner with Sales team to ensure accurate accounting for trade promotions, discounts, bill-backs, deductions, rebates, free fills, and other customer programs using outsourced software.
  • Maintain accurate accruals for trade spend and promotional programs and reconcile actual activity against accruals.
  • Develop reporting to track gross-to-net sales, trade spend, deductions, and net revenue by customer and/or channel.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, and Finance to improve visibility into customer profitability and trade spend.
  • Help establish scalable processes and controls around retail accounting as the company expands into new retailers and distribution channels.

Accounts Payable & Receivable
  • Oversee vendor invoices, payment processing, and vendor reconciliations.
  • Manage customer invoicing, cash receipts, and accounts receivable.
  • Monitor outstanding receivables and support collections as needed.
  • Maintain strong relationships with vendors and external accounting partners.

Controls, Systems & Process Improvement
  • Develop and implement accounting processes, policies, and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve efficiency.
  • Establish scalable processes that can support the company through rapid growth.
  • Document accounting procedures and maintain organized financial records.

Tax, Audit & External Partners
  • Coordinate with external accountants, tax advisors, auditors, and other financial partners.
  • Support preparation of annual tax filings and other compliance requirements.
  • Assist with year-end audit or review processes.
  • Provide supporting schedules and documentation as needed.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including experience in a startup, high-growth company, CPG, consumer products, retail, or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Hands-on experience with month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Experience with inventory accounting and COGS is strongly preferred.
  • Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills.
  • Experience with an ERP/accounting platform such as NetSuite, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Comfortable operating in an environment where processes are still being built and evolving.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Benefits
  • Competitive compensation including salary, bonus, and equity
  • Fully-paid health, dental, 401K, and vision insurance
