What is a CPFR manager?

CPFR Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the Collaborative Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment (CPFR) process between a company and its supply chain partners. Their main role is to facilitate the sharing of information, align forecasts, and coordinate inventory replenishment to ensure products are available when and where they are needed. CPFR Managers work closely with sales, supply chain, and retail partners to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance customer satisfaction. They use data analysis and communication skills to anticipate demand and manage supply chain operations effectively.

How does a CPFR manager typically collaborate with supply chain partners to improve forecast accuracy and inventory management?

A CPFR (Collaborative Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment) Manager works closely with both internal teams and external partners—such as retailers, distributors, and suppliers—to align on sales forecasts and inventory plans. This involves leading regular cross-functional meetings, sharing real-time data, and using collaborative forecasting tools to analyze trends and resolve discrepancies. One of the main challenges is balancing the differing priorities of each stakeholder while ensuring that the supply chain remains agile and responsive to market changes. Success in this role often depends on strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build trust among partners.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPFR manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CPFR Manager, you need expertise in supply chain management, demand forecasting, and inventory control, often supported by a degree in business, supply chain, or a related field. Familiarity with advanced ERP systems, forecasting software, and analytics tools is crucial, and certifications like APICS CPIM or CSCP are highly valued. Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help foster effective collaboration between suppliers and retailers. These competencies are essential for optimizing supply chain efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring product availability.

This role combines operational expertise with exceptional customer service, requiring someone who is adept at managing complex inventory workflows and resolving issues related to product availability. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Walmart's systems and a track record of driving service-level improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end replenishment process for Walmart, including inventory management, order analysis, fulfillment, and forecasting support for select categories across DCs and stores
  • Manage daily replenishment activities to maintain target in-stock levels and maximize sales.
  • Monitor item performance and execute replenishment strategies to support seasonal events, modular transitions, and promotions
  • Monitor and report critical metrics (in stock/out of stock, fill rate, and on-time delivery)
  • Identify and research out-of-stock issues with supply chain partners to provide back in stock dates and action plans to correct and prevent in the future.
  • Drive root-cause analysis for inventory variances and supply disruptions.
  • Analyze POS data, and inventory metrics to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement
  • Partner with Walmart buyers, replenishment analysts, and supply chain contacts to align on promotions, seasonal builds, new item launches, and demand shifts.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Demand Planning, Manufacturing, Logistics, and Customer Service to ensure supply meets demand.
  • Partner with Demand Planners to provide customer forecasts and insights to ensure Walmarts needs are understood and incorporated into demand planning processes.
  • Participate in weekly/monthly reviews with Walmart counterparts, performance and improvement plans.
  • Maintain and optimize replenishment parameters (safety stock, lead times, min/max levels) within Walmart's systems
  • Support new item setup, DC/store distribution planning, and modular resets in coordination with the Walmart merchandising calendar.
  • Track and report KPIs including in-stock %, OTIF, forecast accuracy, inventory turns, and chargeback trends.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities in replenishment processes and implement best practices

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Logistics, or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in replenishment, inventory or supply chain roles, with direct experience managing a Walmart (or similar big-box retail) account.
  • Experience using Walmarts Scintilla or Retail Link systems
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel PowerPoint
  • Strong analytical skills with advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Excellent communication and relationship-management skills, with experience presenting to retail partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Familiarity with Walmart's seasonal planning calendar and modular reset processes.
