Fall 2026 Legal Intern, Criminal Law Reform Project Remote/Hybrid – New York City or Washington DC About the Role The ACLU seeks a Legal Intern in the Criminal Law Reform Project to support litigation and advocacy work focused on correcting systemic injustices in the criminal legal system. This is a part‐time, course‐credit only position open to U.S. law students who are currently matriculated and based in the United States for the entire internship. Team The Criminal Law Reform Project advocates for the constitutional and civil rights of those impacted by criminal legal systems. The team engages in litigation and advocacy to confront systemic government conduct that fuels the carceral state and police abuse, and to empower under‐resourced communities through approaches that advance fundamental rights for all. What You'll Do Assist the team in factual investigations, legal research, and writing to advance our litigation and integrated advocacy programs. Your Day to Day Legal research Legal writing, such as memos and portions of court submissions Support in preparation for and during court cases, including depositions, oral arguments, hearings, or trial What You'll Bring Excellent research skills, including conducting internet and legal database research Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written Attention to detail, excellent organizational and time‐management skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite The initiative to see projects through to completion A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and racial justice Future ACLU'ers Will Be committed to advancing the mission of the ACLU Embed the principles of equity, inclusion and belonging in their work by demonstrating respect for multiple perspectives Work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and conflicts Internship Logistics Location: Remote or hybrid; based in New York City or Washington DC offices Time Commitment: Part‐time (10, 15, or 20 hours per week) Internship Duration: 12 consecutive weeks, start dates September 8 or September 21, 2026 Stipend: Course credit only; internship must be tied to formal education program or receipt of academic credit Equal Opportunity Employment The ACLU is committed to providing reasonable accommodation to individuals with disabilities.
