Equipment Manager / Assistant Golf Course Superintendent
Full-Time (Exempt)
Rate: $53,040.00 starting annual salary [$25.50 hourly] to $91,520.00 maximum annual salary [$44.00 hourly]
Pay Grade: F | Starting salary based on prior experience and education.
Location: Erie Shores Golf Course, Madison, OH 44057
Position Summary: Lake Metroparks is seeking a skilled and dependable Equipment Manager / Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to maintain, repair, and manage golf course maintenance equipment while supporting daily golf course maintenance operations. Under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent, this position performs preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, recordkeeping, and coordination of parts, supplies, and equipment readiness. This role also supports turf maintenance operations, staff training, work assignments, and safe, efficient, and professional operations within the maintenance facility and golf course environment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education and/or Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree or coursework in equipment technology, diesel technology, small engine repair, business management, supervision, turfgrass management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing golf course, grounds, fleet, or related equipment required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory, lead worker, crew leadership, or comparable experience directing work, training staff, assigning tasks, or assisting with operational oversight required.
  • Experience supporting golf course maintenance operations, including daily work coordination, preventive maintenance priorities, equipment readiness, safety practices, and staff communication required.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and remain insurable under the Agency’s policy.
  • Ohio pesticide applicator license preferred, or ability to obtain within a timeframe established by management, as applicable to assigned duties.
  • Pre-employment background check and substance screening required.
  • Must be able to safely operate Park District vehicles and equipment.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in a golf course environment and in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, weekends, holidays, special events, and weather-related operational needs.
Required Training: All Park District employees must complete and maintain all mandatory training, which may include safety, fraud, ethics, sexual harassment, and additional job-specific training.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Inspects, diagnoses, services, and repairs mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, diesel, gasoline, and small-engine systems on golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Prioritizes equipment repairs and preventive maintenance to support safe, efficient, and timely golf course operations.
  • Performs field repairs and prepares equipment for safe daily operation.
  • Sharpens mower reels and blades and sets equipment to appropriate height-of-cut specifications.
  • Maintains preventive maintenance schedules, repair records, equipment history, inventory records, and related documentation.
  • Orders parts, supplies, tools, and materials in accordance with budget guidelines, purchasing procedures, and operational needs.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe maintenance shop, equipment storage area, and related work areas.
  • Assists the Golf Course Superintendent with staff training, daily work assignments, and oversight of golf course maintenance activities.
  • Supports irrigation, drainage, turf care, fertilizer and pesticide applications, and other agronomic practices as assigned and in compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Follows and promotes safe work practices, proper use of personal protective equipment, and compliance with Park District policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
☒ This position may supervise, train, assign, and direct seasonal, part-time, and full-time golf course maintenance staff as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

COMPUTER EXPERTISE REQUIRED / EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  • Safely operates golf course maintenance equipment, utility vehicles, tractors, mowers, sprayers, aerators, loaders, trailers, small power tools, hand tools, and shop equipment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This position requires the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of golf course maintenance equipment, including light and heavy equipment, utility vehicles, mowers, small engines, and shop tools.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices, diagnostics, repair procedures, and safe shop operations.
  • Knowledge of turf maintenance practices for greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, roughs, irrigation, drainage, fertilization, and pesticide application.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety practices, personal protective equipment, chemical handling procedures, and equipment operating standards.
Skills:
  • Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic, electrical, diesel, gasoline, small-engine, mower, and related mechanical systems.
  • Sharpens, adjusts, calibrates, and maintains golf course equipment to support quality course conditions.
  • Organizes work, prioritizes repairs, maintains records, and manages parts and supplies within budget guidelines.
  • Communicates professionally with supervisors, coworkers, vendors, and golf course patrons as needed.
  • Uses computers and software applications for email, documentation, maintenance tracking, purchasing, and recordkeeping.
Abilities:
  • Identifies equipment problems, determines appropriate corrective action, and completes repairs safely and efficiently.
  • Trains, guides, and directs staff in safe equipment operation and golf course maintenance tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a golf course environment, including maintenance shop areas, equipment storage areas, turf areas, cart paths, and outdoor course grounds. The employee works both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to heat, cold, humidity, precipitation, dust, noise, odors, fumes, wet or uneven terrain, and changing course conditions. Work may occur near golfers, golf carts, maintenance vehicles, irrigation systems, ponds, slopes, bunkers, wooded areas, and active golf course operations.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS
Potential hazards include working on and around a golf course, moving maintenance equipment and golf carts, uneven or wet terrain, slopes, ponds, wildlife, flying golf balls, sharp blades, rotating parts, hydraulic systems, fuels, oils, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, batteries, electrical systems, welding or fabrication equipment, power tools, hand tools, noise, dust, fumes, heat, cold, and adverse weather. The employee is expected to follow safety procedures, use required personal protective equipment, and report unsafe conditions promptly.
