Job description

Summary:

The Highway Vehicle and equipment Maintenance Technician works at the direction of the County Highway Superintendent and is responsible for the maintenance and basic repair of the County Highway Equipment.

Job Duties:

  • Performs inspections on Highway Department vehicles so they pass DOT inspections

  • Perform basic maintenance on Highway Department vehicles including brakes, wheel bearings, oil change, tire changes, etc.

  • Coordinates outsourced repairs

  • May assist in the development of specifications for new vehicles and maintenance of equipment

  • Operates and maintains highway equipment as required

  • Assures equipment is in proper and safe running order

  • Follows safety standards

  • Attends ongoing training and safety classes as required

  • Maintains and updates accurate equipment, maintenance and repair records

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Trucks and highway equipment

  • Basic computer and iPad operations

  • Ability to read manuals and equipment specifications

  • Repair, manuals, and proper use of repair equipment and tools

  • Methods, materials, and techniques used to perform road maintenance activities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 180 days of hire required

  • Preferred to live within Hutchinson County and be available to report for work on short notice during emergencies and adverse weather conditions.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Occasionally work is performed outdoors, subject to variable weather conditions and the hazards associated with construction sites and public works projects. Administrative work is performed under typical office conditions. County Auto/Diesel Technician must have the ability to respond to weather and road related emergencies as needed including during nights, holidays and weekends. At the discretion of the Highway Superintendent, schedules can be adjusted for previously scheduled time away. Occasionally lifts and/or moves objects weighing up to 100 pounds such as tools, equipment, supplies, etc. Must be able to access all levels of a construction site, traverse uneven terrain, climb a ladder, and enter and exit from vehicles. Manually operates all department vehicles, tools and equipment as well as office equipment. Spends most of the day standing or walking. Communicates verbally and in writing. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.
