Description The Paramedic performs the duties of a Paramedic by providing highly skilled and specialized emergency medical care to the sick and injured. The employee in this position responds to requests for assistance, assesses the scene and determines the best course of action and establishes a medical treatment plan in accordance with local protocol and the established standard of care for the paramedic. The care will continue during transport of the patient to the appropriate medical facility or receiving hospital.
This position is distinguishable from that of an EMT in that the position requires more advanced certification and can perform specialized medical skills and treatment. Works under general supervision of the Battalion Chief. Examples of Duties Duties and Responsibilities: Performs basic and advanced life support as determined by patient need.
Provide basic and advanced airway skills and management including intubation, surgical cricothyrotomy, chest decompression and the use of the transport ventilator. Performs basic life support skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the use if the automated external defibrillator, the recognition and treatment of shock, the control of bleeding, bandaging, and splinting, and the administration of medications as indicated by the patient and as defined by protocol. Identify the need for resuscitation and take appropriate measures to provide the patient with the best possible outcome.
Complete the patient care report that completely and accurately describes measures taken and the required information to assist with the patient's account for billing purposes. Participate in training and continuing education opportunities to continuously improve advanced life support knowledge and skills as a part of ongoing personal and professional development. Delivers high quality patient care in accordance with current Kansas Board of EMS regulations and the authorized activities of the Kansas certified EMT and as established by local protocol.
Serves as a representative for Miami County EMS, exemplifying department values. Provides ethical leadership and mentoring to others for their benefit and the benefit of the organization. Supports the leadership of the EMS department to reflect the mission, values, and culture of Miami County EMS.
Interacts with other crew members, staff from other first responder agencies, and the public we serve in a manner that is representative of the mission, vision, and goals of the department. Maintains their person, ambulance, and equipment in a state of readiness for the timely and affective medical response to any request for EMS assistance, inter-facility transfer, or standby event. Completes unit checkoffs, cleaning and disinfection of the ambulance and equipment, cleaning of the station, and the completion of daily station duties as needed or as assigned.
Ensures the safety of the patient, the public and any or all responders on any scene. Recognizes the need for additional resources and initiates the incident command system (ICS) as needed. Participates in cleaning, disinfection, and decontamination of the ambulances and equipment.
Participates in department training as part of continuous quality improvement. Participates in the department's health and wellness program including physical fitness and physical agility. Participates in shift and department meetings to review call data and trends in emergency services.
Checks for supplies and medication outdates. Participates in community and public education including demonstrations to schools, civic groups, and local businesses. All other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications Position Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent; two-year college degree or equivalent preferred; minimum of one-year experience preferred. Kansas Certified Paramedic Valid driver's license. AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS Provider Certification preferred or will provide within 6 months of employment.
Completion of NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 required during orientation. Position requires on-call/stand-by work; required to work on holidays; shift work. Proper uniform required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Computer software programs and applications such as MS Office. County and/or city government administration. Knowledge of electronic patient reports, storage, and transmission with HIPPA compliance.
