What is a countertop drafter?

A Countertop Drafter is a professional who creates detailed technical drawings and plans for the fabrication and installation of countertops, often using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software. They work closely with designers, architects, and fabricators to ensure accurate measurements and specifications for materials like granite, quartz, or laminate. Their work is essential for transforming design concepts into precise, buildable projects and minimizing errors during the manufacturing and installation process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a countertop drafter?

To thrive as a Countertop Drafter, you need strong skills in technical drawing, spatial visualization, and attention to detail, typically supported by a background in drafting, architecture, or engineering. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SketchUp), as well as familiarity with countertop materials and fabrication processes, is crucial. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate with clients and production teams are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate project designs, efficient production workflows, and satisfied clients in a competitive construction and remodeling industry.

What are some common challenges faced by countertop drafters during project coordination with installers and fabricators?

Countertop Drafters often encounter challenges ensuring that their technical drawings accurately reflect site conditions and client specifications. Coordinating with installers and fabricators requires clear communication to address discrepancies between design plans and real-world measurements, especially in remodels where existing structures may not be perfectly square or level. Timely revisions and maintaining detailed documentation are essential, as changes during the installation phase can impact material ordering and project timelines. Building strong relationships with field teams and being responsive to on-site feedback greatly helps in overcoming these challenges.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Artisan Design Group (ADG), a Lowe's company, is a leading national provider of interior finishings solutions for homebuilders and property management clients. ADG delivers end-to-end design, procurement, and installation services for flooring, cabinets, countertops, and a growing portfolio of interior products.

Founded in 2016, ADG has grown by uniting respected regional operators across the country. Following its 2025 acquisition by Lowe's Companies, Inc., the company continues to operate as ADG while benefiting from the scale, resources, and brand strength of one of the most trusted names in home improvement. Together, they are expanding their capabilities in a highly fragmented market while remaining committed to craftsmanship, service, and local expertise, making ADG's teams valued partners nationwide.

About the Role

GableStone is ADG's new, dedicated countertop fabrication and installation business. Our first location is launching in the greater Charlotte, North Carolina (Pineville) area, where we're building the entire team from the ground up. This is a major strategic growth initiative for ADG and Lowe's, and we're hiring approximately 50 associates between now and August 2026.

As a CAD Drafter/Programmer, you'll create and modify production-ready CAD drawings while generating CNC programs that drive countertop fabrication. Working closely with templating, fabrication, installation, and production teams, you'll help ensure projects are accurate, optimized for manufacturing, minimize material waste, and are delivered on time.

This role combines CAD drafting and CNC programming in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. We're looking for someone who enjoys solving technical challenges, has a strong attention to detail, and takes pride in producing quality work that supports efficient production.

What You'll Do

  • Create and modify production-ready CAD drawings for countertop fabrication projects.
  • Generate CNC programs for manufacturing equipment using CAD/CAM software.
  • Review project layouts, field measurements, and specifications to ensure accuracy before production.
  • Partner with measure technicians, fabrication, installation, and production teams to support successful project execution.
  • Troubleshoot design and programming issues while maintaining quality and production efficiency.
  • Monitor and update CAD drawings and CNC programs as project changes occur.
  • Help optimize material utilization and minimize waste through accurate programming and layout design.
  • Ensure the correct programs and materials are prepared for production.
  • Track project status and maintain accurate project documentation throughout the production process.
Requirements:

What We're Looking For

  • Experience creating CAD drawings and CNC programs within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong CAD drafting and CNC programming fundamentals.
  • Ability to read blueprints, shop drawings, and construction documents.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting production deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred

  • Experience with AutoCAD and CNC programming software.
  • Experience with AlphaCAM, Moraware, Slabsmith, or similar CAD/CAM software.
  • Experience in countertop fabrication, stone fabrication, cabinetry, millwork, architectural stone, solid surface manufacturing, custom woodworking, or other precision manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing operations where CAD drawings are translated into CNC production.

Why Join GableStone?

What Makes This Opportunity Unique

  • Ground-Up Build: Be part of the founding team at GableStone's first countertop fabrication and installation operation.
  • Long-Term Growth: Backed by Lowe's and Artisan Design Group, GableStone is expected to expand to additional locations across the country.
  • Career Advancement: As the business grows, there will be opportunities for new roles, new locations, and internal career progression.
  • Stability: Join a long-term strategic investment supported by both ADG and Lowe's.
  • Make an Impact: Help shape the processes, culture, and success of a new operation from day one.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and bonus opportunity
  • Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off & Paid Holidays
  • Career Growth Opportunities
