To thrive as a Counseling Intern, you need foundational knowledge in counseling theories, ethics, and basic assessment techniques, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program. Familiarity with documentation software, case management systems, and sometimes telehealth platforms is common. Strong active listening, empathy, and self-awareness are crucial soft skills for building trust and rapport with clients.
