Job description

Cost & Inventory Accounting Manager

W2 Contract to Possible Hire

Onsite, San Carlos, CA

$53-$77/hr

We are seeking a Cost & Inventory Accounting Operations Manager to serve as the bridge between operations and finance at Nautilus. This role will own the integrity of inventory transactions, operational financial controls, standard costing methodologies, and manufacturing variance analysis for our reagent, flow cell, and instrumentation product lines. You will work cross-functionally with operations, supply chain, procurement, and leadership to ensure our NetSuite ERP and inventory systems accurately reflect the economics of the business.

This is a highly hands-on role, ideal for someone who has operated in biotech, life sciences, medical device, or other regulated manufacturing environments where inventory and operational accounting are deeply intertwined. You will play a critical role in enabling scalable financial reporting, accurate gross margins, inventory visibility, and operational decision-making as Nautilus moves from pre-commercial to commercial stage.

This position will report to the Corporate Controller.

Responsibilities

Inventory & Operational Financial Controls

  • Own month-end inventory close processes across raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods (reagent kits, flow cells, and instrument components)
  • Ensure timely and accurate closure of purchase orders, receipts, inventory transfers, and sales orders in NetSuite
  • Reconcile inventory movements, adjustments, yield loss, and scrap across Reagent and Flow Cell product lines
  • Partner with operations and supply chain teams to improve ERP transaction discipline and inventory accuracy
  • Maintain inventory subledger integrity and support reconciliation to the general ledger
  • Review inventory discrepancies, negative inventory balances, and operational exceptions
  • Support implementation and optimization of NetSuite workflows and inventory controls as Nautilus scales toward commercialization

Cost Accounting & Manufacturing Finance

  • Build and maintain standard costing methodologies for raw materials, packaging, labor, freight, contract manufacturing, and cold-chain storage
  • Develop and maintain product-level and batch-level COGS models for reagent kits, flow cells, and instrumentation
  • Create labor, freight, and materials standards and perform variance analysis against actuals, including quarterly standard cost validations and revaluations
  • Analyze purchase price variances, manufacturing variances, and gross margin drivers
  • Support pricing decisions and operational improvement initiatives through financial analysis
  • Partner with operations to improve yields, throughput, and cost efficiency

Reporting & Cross-Functional Support

  • Build operational finance KPIs and reporting dashboards for inventory and cost performance
  • Support forecasting, budgeting, and financial planning activities related to inventory and cost of goods sold
  • Assist with audit readiness, inventory procedures, and SEC/investor reporting
  • Maintain SOX 404 internal control documentation and procedures for inventory and cost accounting processes
  • Collaborate with leadership on scaling operational and financial infrastructure as the company moves from pre-commercial to commercial stage

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in manufacturing finance, cost accounting, inventory accounting, supply chain finance, or operational finance roles
  • Experience working in biotechnology, life sciences, medical device, diagnostics, or other regulated manufacturing environments (preferred)
  • Strong understanding of inventory accounting, standard costing, variance analysis, and operational financial controls
  • Experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite, SAP, or similar (NetSuite strongly preferred)
  • Advanced Excel / financial modeling capabilities
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, procurement, and leadership teams
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, early-stage biotech environment
