Investment Tax Manager

Corporate Tax/Controllership

Full Time | Boston, MA or New York, NY

This is an individual contributor role

The Opportunity

Join a high-performing Corporate Tax team that plays a critical role in supporting MassMutual's financial strength and long-term success. Our team is collaborative, agile, and driven by a shared commitment to delivering value through technical excellence, continuous learning, and accountability. This is an exciting opportunity for a tax professional who enjoys complex investments, ownership of important processes, and the ability to make a meaningful impact.

The Team

As an Investment Tax Accountant, you will be part of the Investment Tax team within the Corporate Tax Department and the broader Controllers Organization. In this role, you will take ownership of a diverse portfolio of investment tax processes while partnering with experienced colleagues across the organization. To support your success, you'll begin with a structured transition period alongside the current process owner, providing the knowledge and resources needed to build expertise and confidence in the role.

The Impact
  • Develop and maintain deep tax expertise across a diverse investment portfolio, including fixed maturity and equity securities, mortgage loans, real estate, joint ventures, and derivatives.
  • Take ownership of the tax accounting for illiquid and asset-backed investments, including tax basis tracking, income recognition, and gain and loss analysis related to investment dispositions.
  • Support foreign information reporting and anti-deferral tax requirements for the investment portfolio, including Passive Foreign Investment Company (PFIC) and Controlled Foreign Corporation (CFC) reporting.
  • Analyze and explain differences between book and tax accounting for assigned investments and entities, translating complex concepts into clear, actionable insights for business partners.
  • Prepare and review U.S. income tax provisions, forecasts, and supporting tax return workpapers while ensuring strong documentation and control processes are maintained.
  • Independently manage recurring tax processes, including maintaining procedures, documenting controls, and sharing knowledge with team members through cross-training and collaboration.
  • Partner with colleagues throughout the Tax Department, including Tax Counsel, to support tax controversy matters, transactions, special projects, and tax compliance activities.
  • Leverage technology and contribute to process improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, strengthen controls, and drive high-quality outcomes.
  • Communicate findings, recommendations, and key insights effectively to Senior Tax Management.
  • Research and document complex tax issues and developments as needed.
  • This role is ideal for a tax professional who enjoys complex investment structures, values ownership and accountability, and wants the opportunity to influence processes while working alongside a collaborative and experienced team.
The Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years of tax experience in public accounting, financial services, or a related environment
  • 4+ years of experience independently managing recurring tax processes from start to finish, including documentation, process ownership, and knowledge transfer
The Ideal Qualifications
  • Insurance company tax experience, including familiarity with statutory accounting and the differences among statutory, GAAP, and tax reporting for invested assets
  • Exposure to foreign information reporting or anti-deferral tax regimes, or a demonstrated ability to quickly develop expertise in these areas
  • Tax accounting experience within one or more of the following industries: insurance, banking and lending, private equity, hedge funds, real estate, or REITs
  • Experience preparing and reviewing corporate income tax provisions and returns, as well as partnership tax compliance
  • Knowledge of tax accounting for securities, derivatives, or other complex financial instruments
  • Working knowledge of ASC 740 accounting for income taxes
  • Experience supporting and managing activities related to the financial close process
  • Familiarity with tax compliance and provision software such as Corptax, along with business intelligence and automation tools such as Alteryx; experience with similar platforms is also valued
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to review work for quality, accuracy, and relevance while identifying issues and recommending effective solutions
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to build relationships and work effectively across teams and diverse backgrounds
  • A commitment to continuous learning and professional development through technical research, continuing education, and industry best practices
